Chapter twenty

Memories of last night keep interrupting my train of thought. I didn’t bite anyone, much to Ri’s disappointment. But Kirby and Harlen did look damn fine in nothing but their mistletoe wreaths. Two each. Kirby crowned with mine and Harlen’s. Harlen proudly wearing Kirby’s and mine.

When they had jointly presented the wreaths they had made to me, my eyes had watered again. Words stuck in my throat. I reverently placed the wreaths on my head and then stood frozen in place, back rigid and moisture leaking out of my closed eyes. Harlen and Kirby gently kissed the droplets away and that had led to other things.

My smile falters. I’m staring at my laptop screen, but I’m not reading a word. Again. I need to pull myself together. This is ridiculous. I can’t wander around all day with a soppy grin on my face and a vacant mind. Okay, not exactly vacant, just vacant of the things it should be filled with. It is rather stuffed with images it should not be dwelling on.

But I am better than this. I am a mage. The very cornerstones of wielding magic are concentration and a laser focus.

A knock on the door makes me jump. Oh, this could be perfect. Talking to someone might just pull my thoughts from the bedroom.

“Come in.”

Arin walks in. He looks at me and falters, his eyes fixing on my head. His eyes widen.

“Oh wow! Congratulations!” he says.

Oh gods, why is a blush threatening to take over my face? Why do my hands want to fly up and feel the wreaths on my head?

“Thank you,” I manage to say.

Arin makes it the rest of the way into my study. While he is taking a seat across from me, I frantically compose myself.

“I thought we were meeting later, with Henderson and Rupert, to discuss rider allocation?” I say.

Arin nods in agreement. “We are, but I wanted to talk to you about the Bryn investigation.”

Shit. Seems Arin is far too diligent. Being a newly assigned wing commander has not been enough of a distraction. I should have heaped even more duties on him.

I nod calmly at him to continue. Hopefully, I am managing a blank expression. I’ve worn one for so many years now, it should be effortless.

Arin places a paper file on my desk. A muscle in my jaw twitches.

“I thought a paper report would be more secure than email,” he explains.

Clever little shit. I should never have underestimated him. Just because his old flight were taking advantage of his dragon’s small size, doesn’t mean that Arin isn’t perfectly capable and intelligent.

“It is all in there,” he continues. “But the gist is, Bryn was working for the senedd and it seems he had a change of heart just before he disappeared. I’ve concluded that the senedd murdered him. Of course, they may just have him locked up in a cell somewhere, but that seems like an unnecessary loose end.”

All I can do is stare wordlessly at Arin as a thousand thoughts whirl through my mind.
