Chapter Six

The gray dragon, Aurek, banked to the left, circling the rocky outcropping that was Red Crag. He had just returned home after flying south, over many leagues of barren tundra, till he’d reached the northern edge of the forest. Hunting any farther would have been useless, as anything could hide in those damnably dense trees.

It might be foolish to waste his time searching for Nyssa, but he didn’t care. Darga’s news, that the girl lived, stirred his hope. Perhaps the fiery little beauty could still be his.

Having her stolen out from under his nose had been infuriating. Almost as if the fates were laughing at him, but Aurek the Mighty was not so easily bested. If Nyssa indeed still walked the earth, he would find and claim her. No other outcome was acceptable.

He landed, gouging the frozen ground with his talons as he steadied his massive girth. Shifting to eldrin form, he strode past the first sentry and brushed Brokk aside as his champion hurried to greet him.

“Not now,” Aurek barked. “I need to speak with Darga.”

“She’s in her chambers.”

Aurek nodded, and continued down one of the carved stone passageways. When he reached her rooms, he didn’t bother to knock.

“Have you tracked her yet?” he asked, pushing through the heavy fur hanging over the entrance.

“Do come in,” Darga answered coolly. She didn’t bother to turn from the polished metal mirror. It reflected a slightly distorted image, showing her long silver hair, gaunt face, and wide pale eyes. She continued to brush her hair, ignoring him.

“I asked you a bloody question,” he rumbled. “Answer me!”

Darga’s lips thinned.

“I have not tracked her yet, but I am ready. If she uses the mind link again, even briefly, I will know her location.”

“You’d best not fail me on this. My patience is not endless.”

Darga slapped her brush down on the stone table and turned to him.

“Neither is mine,” she growled, eyes narrowing. “You forget yourself Aurek. You may be a god to this clan, but it is I who made you so. Without me your power crumbles.”

“Without me, you’d have been tried and executed by the dragon lords,” Aurek snarled back. “You pledged undying loyalty to me. Or don’t you remember?”

“I remember.”

“Good.” He stared daggers at her, fighting the urge to smack the proud sneer off her face.

“There’s just one thing you must promise.” She picked up the brush and returned her gaze to the mirror.

“What is that?”

“When we find the girl, you will let me do as I please with the mother.”

“Why?”

“Noss was my pupil, and she betrayed me. I will make certain she regrets doing so.”

“Suit yourself. I’m only interested in the daughter.”

“Then it appears we are not at odds,” Darga said. “I will inform you as soon as I have found her.”

Harith waited by the door, feeling uncommonly nervous. Nyssa had made it clear how important this night was, and he didn’t want to disappoint her. Thankfully his injuries were nearly mended, so he could manage the long walk to the village.
