Chapter Fourteen

SERENA

The sudden surge of power that pulled Serena was overwhelming. She recognized the sense of it, as she had a familiarity with the unity to understand just what had pulled her, but it was an enormous draw of energy and seemed as if it were suddenly drawing on her in a way that she could scarcely fathom.

She felt the unity as it swirled, pulling upon her, dragging her—and Tessatha—away from where they had been and toward the tower. She feared that she was going to slam directly into it, given the speed with which the tower was pulling upon her, and the force of the essence that was working against her, but as they neared, some strange and enormous opening began to form at the side of the tower.

There wasn't anything inside of her essence reacting to the tower. It was reacting to something else. It was reacting to the essence around her. To the unity.

Or perhaps, she realized, it was reacting in some way to Tessatha. If that were the case, they needed to be cautious, as Serena didn't know whether something that she had done in the past, back when she and Arowend had been researching the different powers in the world, would have triggered something for the tower.

She floated inside, and then darkness.

Everything seemed to be filled with power, though. Serena was aware of it, and she could feel the energy that was there, pressing upon her, in a way that left her trembling with it and trying to make sense of just what was that she felt. It seemed to come from all around, and energy that radiated, pulsing, and…

Flowing.

She had been aware of that sense as she had felt essence all around her in the landscape as she had been testing different towers, temples, and places of power. She didn't know that she would find anything quite like this, but now she felt some part of it and recognized that there was something there that she might be able to pull on, if only she could recognize the power, she could draw from it.

Tessatha was next to her. Serena was aware of the other woman, but only through the dragon mind connection, not because she could see her. She saw nothing. Everything around her radiated a sense of unity, to the point where even Serena's understanding of other essences seemed to be fading.

"How is this possible?" Tessatha whispered, the question coming through the dragon mind link.

They were floating, and through that floating, Serena felt the energy holding her up, propping her above the ground, or perhaps it was just holding her. Cradling her. Maybe there was nothing she could do against it, and she would have to find some way to fight her way free.

"I don't know," Serena said. "I'm not entirely sure what happened here, only that I can feel…"

She wasn't even sure what she could feel. Power?

There was a certain element of power here, but she wasn't sure if it was only the power that she was detecting.
