Cailan and company packed their things as soon as Cass returned with the horses, and they rode away from the destruction as fast as they could. They didn’t bother to check the dead or search for the King’s Guard. Cailan would have helped, but he spent the entire time holding Zehra.

Only once they had to leave did he finally decide to stir her from sleep so she could ride.

They rode hard for several hours without daring to stop. Sure, they hadn’t taken the time to check if all the Sentinels back there were dead. Some of them surely were, but there were probably many that were merely knocked unconscious. Regardless, they needed to get as far away from there as they could.

None of them spoke. No one dared to stop. Even Aideen didn’t say a thing about Murk, who rode at the front with her while Cass took up the rear. Cailan rode in the middle with Zehra’s horse charging alongside his. Zehra herself sat behind him, her arms around his waist. He could feel her nose digging into his back, feel the weight of her behind him.

Every so often, he would look back at her, and she would squeeze him tighter, reassuring him that she was okay.

They rode well into the evening, even as the sun fell below the horizon and the darkness descended on them. Only once the sky was just barely light enough to see by did they stop and set up camp. Still no words aside from a few orders from Cass. All of them were still in a state of shock and exhaustion.

Once they got the tent set up and a fire blazing, bathing them in light and warmth, Aideen took Zehra into the tent to change her bloodied clothes and wash off the blood that had caked on her arms and mouth. She’d kept it on her all this time without a word of complaint.

For that matter, her arms had bloodied his clothes as well, but Cailan didn’t care to change just yet.

No, he sat with Murk and Cass around the fire as they passed a wineskin and warmed themselves with drink and flame.

After a while, Aideen and Zehra emerged from the tent and joined them. Cailan made space as Zehra sat next to him.

They didn’t say a word for a while, which wasn’t a surprise since they’d been silent for so long. It was hard to come down from the shock of that fight, even hours later. It was dangerous to even have a fire at this point, but this far north, the constant cold necessitated it.

Cailan was content to stay silent for the time being. He didn’t want to have to unpack what had happened back there. The trauma that Zehra was clearly dealing with, and his close brush with death, were things he didn’t want to address right away. Maybe that was cowardly, but he was tired and just wanted to rest and forget about all of this.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t how things worked, and his sister wasn’t going to let it go that easy.
