Chapter 9

Jed

Katira followed as Liam was carried to town on a stretcher, face down. The arrow stuck up and moved back and forth as he was rocked by the quick step of the circus men. They clearly wanted him gone from the circus as soon as possible.

Rakin had agreed to have the horse and wagon made ready and the clean up at the circus had already begun. A smaller tent was being set up in another field and the entire circus was on the move to the new location. It was still several hours until high-sun and Katira had no doubt that the circus would be open for its first show.

Many townsfolk and visitors in town for the circus watched with morbid curiosity as Liam was hurried through the streets.

As they noticed the dragon that Katira carried they cried out in awe and more than a little fear. The entire town had heard about the fire at the circus and the smell of smoke still wafted along the streets.

They finally stopped at the door of a building that was marked with the sign of a healer. A staff with two snakes coiled around it and a pair of wings at the top was engraved in a wooden board that hung above the window.

The door stood open and a man waited, watching, as if expecting them. The sleeves of his heavy green tunic were rolled up and he looked at the dragonet with distaste.

‘You’ll not bring that in here!’

Katira held the dragonet tightly and covered his head a little as if she could shield him from the words.

‘As long as nobody upsets him he won’t be a problem,’ Katira assured him.

‘The patient can come in. That thing can’t.’ The healer did not budge from the doorway and Liam groaned as he lay on the stretcher.

‘Fine. I will stay out here,’ Katira agreed. Liam needed help.

‘Across the street,’ the healer insisted.

Katira nodded and crossed the small lane and stood next to a bakery. The healer finally moved and the men, stretcher and Liam vanished inside. A few seconds later the circus folk hurried out with the stretcher and ran off back towards the circus. No doubt they would still have their circus duties to do before the show opened.

The healer’s door shut with a resounding bang and Katira felt the dragon jump in fright. She soothed him with a gentle hum in the off-key way that Liam had done yesterday and rocked him gently. To her great surprise the dragon began to rumble gently in what she could only describe as a purr like a kitten.

The crowds in the street alternated between curiosity and fear. Mostly it was the shop owners that seemed upset and Katira could well understand their concerns. One by one they moved her off and soon she was at the end of the lane and could only just see the healer’s door.

Only a few children and their parents hung around her now as she sat on a stone curb and gently hummed to the dragonet.
