Chapter 31

Jarryd awakened late that afternoon. For once, his dreams had been uneventful, for which he was glad. He almost felt good. He sat up and saw that Hamisi and Kathor were on the far side of the pond, discussing something. Ficken was nowhere to be seen.

They saw that he was up and joined him.

“Feel better?” Hamisi asked.

“I do.”

“What’s your decision?” Kathor asked.

“I think we have to keep moving.” He winced inwardly when he saw Hamisi’s expression. “I just don’t see what other choice we have. We can’t risk arriving too late.” He raised his left arm. “And I don’t know how long I have. I’m sorry,” he said to Hamisi.

“It’s okay,” she said. “Kathor’s right. The final decision rests with you. I said my piece. I won’t say it again.”

Kathor looked at the position of the sun. “We should start for the city soon.”

Jarryd stood up and stretched. He really did feel a lot better. “When this is over, I just want to find a quiet place and lie down for about a year. That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

Ficken rejoined them. Jarryd told him the decision. “We’re heading into the city now. Will you be okay here?”

“I have seen no one all afternoon except for an old woman washing clothes in the stream. I will not be troubled. I will spend the time strengthening the bonds holding the felakin in place.”

“Why don’t you just let it go?” Hamisi asked.

Ficken blinked at her. “Never in the history of the Selaki has a Watermaster freed a felakin. It is not done.”

“Doing something because it’s always been done that way isn’t much of a reason.”

Ficken looked thoughtful. “You speak true. I will think on this.”

“Whatever that thing really is, I can’t imagine it likes being trapped in there. Nothing likes being trapped. I feel sorry for it.”

“I have never considered this. My people do not trouble themselves with such things.”

“Further proof that you aren’t like them,” she said.

They prepared to leave. “The same disguises as before?” Hamisi asked.

Kathor put up one hand. “Do not make me lame again. Think of something else.”

“It’s not easy. Maybe if you weren’t the size of a bear.”

“My father had a pet bear,” Hamisi said. “He liked to get it drunk. One night it fell off the cliff.”

“What does that have to do with anything?” Kathor asked.

Jarryd chuckled. “You think I should make Kathor look like a pet bear?”

“It’s your decision, Knight Commander,” she replied, trying to keep the smile off her face.

“A pet bear it is. Did it wear clothes? A little hat or anything?” Hamisi laughed, but Kathor was not amused.

“Is this the time for your jokes?”

Jarryd shrugged. “Considering everything, I think it’s the best time for jokes.”

They walked downhill and found a road leading through farmland. In the distance they could see Caldor. Its wall was white. Most of the buildings were white with blue or green roofs. It looked peaceful.

“I don’t think there was any fighting here,” Hamisi said. “Everything looks too nice.
