It was another dayâs walk to leave Obera, and I was glad to see the back of it.
The next task was finding something to eat. We were in no-manâs land between Obera and Sastril. It was a rocky landscape, with nothing but a few inedible shrubs to break up the monotony of gray rock. Fatigue was beginning to set in, and if I didnât get a drink soon, Iâd collapse.
âYouâve travelled this place, right?â Azar panted. âYou could point us in the direction of the nearest steak, couldnât you?â
I laughed, though there wasnât much humor in it. âThis place barely supports plant life. Very little plant life means fewer animals. Weâre not going to eat until we reach Sastril tonight.â
âIâm starved. Do we have any more of the broth?â
I shook my head. âWe ate it last night, remember?â
âRight. Sorry, itâs hard to remember. All the rock seems to blend together.â
I glanced at my companion, worried. He didnât look sunstruck, but that didnât mean anything. I would have thought a native desert dweller would have a better tolerance for the heat. Apparently, I was wrong. Azar kept licking his lips; his eyes were dazed and unfocused, and beneath the smattering of red scales he looked pale. I put an arm out to stop him and he took three steps in place before realizing what Iâd done.
âAzar, bend down for me, will you? I need to check something.â
Azar blinked a few times before slowly bowing his head toward me. I pressed the back of my hand to his brow. It was sweaty, but it also felt too cold. Clammy, even. Every time Iâd touched him in the past, heâd blazed with heat. Something was very wrong if he was cool to my touch.
âYouâre cold,â I murmured. âAzar, how long have you been feeling this way?â
âSince the canyons,â he admitted. âIâm not sure that the broth agreed with me. My head is aching.â
I cursed. I steered him into the shadow of the nearest rock and ordered him to sit. He flopped onto the ground with a groan. I had to get water into him, as soon as I possibly could. But where was I going to find it? The nearest well would be a dayâs walk away, and I couldnât leave him here. Heâd die long before I could return. I craned my head to look at the sky. It was a merciless blue, without a cloud in sight.
âYou should leave me,â Azar whispered. âNo reason for both of us to die.â
âIâm not leaving you.â The reply was instantaneous and unthinking. No matter how many times I tried to tell myself I didnât feel anything toward Azar, reality always had a way of proving me wrong. I couldnât leave him alone. I couldnât let him die. To do so would kill a part of me. A part of me that hadnât felt anything since Rowe had left.
âOne of us needs to survive,â he insisted. âIt should be you. Youâre a better person than me.
