Chapter 16
Akeem & the Dagfan Dragons
This girl had guts, Iâd give her that. I had watched the northern-looking girl scale down the terraced walls of the Training Hall before jumping to the arena floor, intent on coming here. She had moved like she knew what she was doing â pausing at the stone plinths, breaking her movement into both fast and slow.
Maybe I had been wrong about her before, I thought, as I looked at her under the glow of the torches. She was pretty, for sure â and maybe her pale hair and her looks had allowed me to underestimate her. But now, I couldnât help but be impressed. It wasnât her height or her skill that made me question my earlier assessmentâit was her steely stare of determination. And the way she had unmanned a potential attacker, I thought, as I rubbed my still-aching palm.
But she needed to see what this place was. If she had chosen to come here, despite my warning, if she was adamant on riding her dragon into battle, then she needed to see why I ran the Wild Company like I did.
âItâs like this,â I said, gesturing for her to follow as I walked quickly down the passageway. It was carved into the soft rocks of the bluff and was many times wider than I could stretch out my hands, big enough to fit a dragon, one at a time. After we descended a little while, it levelled out into a broad and long cavern, with gated openings all around it, with more âdragon avenuesâ heading deeper into the rocks. The hiss and rustle of the creatures came from behind the gates, and the smell of soot was thick in the air.
âDagfan doesnât know horse muck about dragons, but they think they do,â I told her, earning a look of surprise from the girl.
âThen why are they training at all?â she whispered, shadowing me as I took her on a tour of the dragon caves.
I grimaced. There were as many answers to that as there were grains of sand, but only two that stuck out. âTorvald,â I said, before adding, âDeadweed.â
âTorvald has the monopoly on dragons.â She nodded. She got it.
âYes, and the three Lords of the South want to change all of that.â I gritted my teeth, not at the idea of southerners having their own dragon-training (as that is what we Binshee taught our young men to do, after all) but at the ignorance and arrogance of Lord Ehsan, Lord Kasim and Lord Qadir to think that they could just force dragons and soldiers together and make it work! But there was one thing that the three Lords of the South (usurper Lords, I mentally added) were correct about. âTorvald will always have the upper hand over everything: trade, transport, communications, warfare, so long as they have the Dragon Academy,â I said, earning another silent nod from the girl as I looked over to her.
âBut what the South doesnât understand is that you have to befriend the dragons.
