Chapter 15

I sat there on the end of our bed watching my wife’s oh so shapely ass as it sashayed its way down the stairs. Those perfectly shaped and so squeezable orbs almost taunting me from beneath the stretched denim of her tight jeans. The smell of Cathy’s perfume fresh in my nose, the feel of her parting kiss lingering on my cheek.

Moving to the window I nudged the curtains ever so slightly. Feeling the immediate tightening in my chest as I saw the way Cathy and Hoss kissed. A deep, long and soulful kiss as Cathy ran her fingers through Hoss’s curly white hair, his own hands busy cupping and squeezing the ass I’d been admiring just seconds before.

Hoss’s strong arms pulled her closer and their kiss became hotter and hungrier. A few words exchanged before Cathy threw a long leg over the Harley’s frame and snuggled up close behind her lover. The symbolism of her arms wrapped tight around the hips and belly of the outlaw biker clear to me and anyone else who might have been watching. Thankfully the remote position of our house protected us from prying eyes and what would have been shocking gossip. (But maybe I was kidding myself, the way they carried on at the diner meant I’m sure tongues were wagging – although as Cathy had pointed out, must people in our small town were smart enough not to get on the wrong side of Hoss by careless talk)

As the low growl of the Harley grew more distant, I turned inward and spotted a letter on the bed, the ornate copperplate unmistakable Cathy.

Feeling more than a little nervous, I picked up the letter and started reading.

‘John, thanks for letting me do this … I knew you would! I know you love it but that it’s also hard sometimes, so I just want to say thanks and tell you how much I love you. Not sure when I’ll be back, Hoss was kind of sketchy about that, but I’ll call you as soon as I know more. If I’m not back tonight I’ll call to let you know and ask Denise to pop in to ‘check you’re okay’. Remember, whatever happens, I’ll always love you, Cathy xxx’

I must have read and re-read that letter half-a-dozen times during the next couple of hours. Everything together causing me to feel like I was the proverbial frog being slowly boiled, my emotions and tingling body simmering just below boiling point for what seemed an eternity.

The clock seemed to move at snail’s pace as I looked at the letter again and again, each time my nervous brain putting a new and more troubling spin on Cathy’s words.

Bad enough that she couldn’t give me any guidance on when she might return, but what did she mean by ‘whatever happens, I’ll always love you’?

What was she thinking might happen? And why did she need to reassure me that this wouldn’t affect her love for me? The classic example of when someone gives reassurance, and it has the total opposite effect.
