August 20th, 1879

“Creek, creek.” the boat sounded as I drove the boat. It was night time and I had been staying up long hours because I was so troubled I couldn’t sleep. I wept and I stayed up just asking the lord for guidance. And then my brother Margo emerged from the shadows and startled me as I cried. He touched my shoulder saying:

“Why do you cry?” I immediately dried my eyes with my sleeves.

“Cry?” I said. “I am a soldier, I don’t cry!” I looked straight ahead away from him.

“Marco.” He said. “It is about time to let go of all that pain.” He held tight to my shoulder. “I know I have. I guess it makes you feel a little better.” He said looking down. “It’s not like it’s going to bring them back though.” he told me.

“I know.” I tried not to cry. “But I never got to say goodbye.” I rested my head on my arms on the steering wheel.

“Neither did I.” he said. “Do you think I enjoyed watching our father die? It’s one of the last memories I had when I had my eyesight. Do you know that’s a horrible thing, for one of the last things you have seen is your father’s death and living in a jail cell boot camp!? At least you saw the love of your life!!! If you were to lose your sight now, at least you’d have the fond memories of your son, and the love of your life!”

“But Margo! How am I to know if I will ever see them again?! Huh?! ANSWER ME THAT WILL YOU!!!!”

Margo wept and I came to him and embraced him.

“I’m sorry.” I said. “This is hard on both of us.”

“I’m sorry too, but it’s just so hard.”

“I’m not mad at you. Don’t worry; we’ll get through this I promise.”
