Sabine Baring-Gould

Sabine Baring-Gould (1834–1924), squire-parson of Lew Trenchard, will always be associated with the great hymns he wrote, especially. ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’, but he was amazingly prolific in other branches of literature, including novels, biographies, religious and travel books, and studies of antiquities and folklore. His fascinating volume, The Book of Were-Wolves: Being an Account of a Terrible Superstition (1865), contained many allegedly true reports of both wolfmen and vampires, and remains one of the most important works on the subject. Bram Stoker used both this book and Curious Myths of the Middle Ages while researching East European folklore and legends prior to writing Dracula. ‘A Dead Finger’ was first serialised in the weekly magazine, Woman, on 21 April, 28 April and 5 May 1897, one month before the first edition of Dracula, and was reprinted in Baring-Gould’s collection of supernatural short stories, A Book of Ghosts (1904).
