Chapter 23

Cassidy

Time away with Parker is exactly what I need right now. After our fight, and subsequent make-up session, we seem to be closer than ever, a new level of trust forming between us. He’s even checked in on me multiple times, probably to confirm he didn’t scare me off.

Truthfully, I was surprised by his expertise in the kink department, especially when he came out of the shower with a handful of toys. Although I had been ready to use the safe word he had given me, the moment never presented itself. I trusted him more than I trusted myself, and the satisfaction radiating from his eyes matched my own feelings.

The past few days have been nothing short of brutal at work, leaving me little mental space to dwell on the steamy memory. My shifts have been a whirlwind of chaos, with multiple patients arriving in critical condition, their lives hanging in the balance. Despite our best efforts, none of them managed to pull through. It’s a soul-crushing experience, watching the doctors call time of death while the anguished cries of grieving family members fill the air.

When I started working in the ER, I was struggling to find ways to cope with the emotional trauma that I experienced at work. Witnessing the pain experienced by patients and their families was overwhelming, and it became impossible to dissociate from their experiences. I became barely functional outside of the hospital, unable to focus on anything but grief.

Morgan recommended that I try journaling as a way to process my emotions, which I have to admit, has been a game changer. I don’t journal after every shift, but when the weight of the trauma becomes unbearable, or a particularly challenging case affects me deeply, I sit down and let my thoughts flow onto paper. The words serve as a reminder that each patient I encounter has a unique journey that deserves to be remembered, even if their story ends tragically. It helps me find solace that their names and stories won’t be forgotten.

Parker and I ended up driving to his family’s lake house from Atlanta, a journey that consisted of seven hours of pure entertainment for me, and pure torture for Parker. He was meticulous about the schedule, insisting we leave at the crack of dawn, precisely at 5 am, so that we could make the most of our time at the lake.

I couldn’t resist putting on a show, dramatically groaning and hiding under the covers as if waking up at that hour was an impossible feat. The look on his face was priceless, as if he was unsure whether to laugh or yell. Choosing violence, he pulled the covers off and threw me over his shoulder, smacking my ass on the way down to the car.

He ended up renting a Ford Explorer for the drive since his precious Tesla couldn’t make the full trip, and it was super fun playing passenger princess the whole way. I wrapped myself in blankets, placed my Diet Coke in the cup holder, and leaned the seat back as far as it could go for ultimate relaxation.
