Chapter 16

The shock made me speechless.

I was unable to comprehend what was about to happen. It felt like everything was moving in slow motion.

James was staring unblinkingly at the statue with his hands on the steering wheel. The car was sliding headfirst into the unforgiving carving in granite. It wasn’t going to budge and the car would be collateral damage including those inside it.

A deep breath was followed by my hands grabbing the wheel and pulling it to the side sharply. The car was still in a direct course to catastrophe but then something happened.

A guiding light or some higher power took control of the situation through my hands.

The wheels dug into the soft earth and were kicking up mud that showered everything behind us. The sickening and jaw-dropping sound of metal scraping against the statue was making me grind my teeth together.

The car continued to move until it came in contact with the solid surface of the stone path used by bicycles and joggers. We were sideways across it but somehow we had avoided a trip to the emergency room.

My hands were on his still on the steering wheel. I felt connected to him in a way that I couldn’t even describe. He looked stunned with wild-eyed wonder. I had to admit it was a close call and one that I didn’t want to repeat anytime soon. Something bigger and extraordinary was at work.

I took my hands away from him and they were shaking.

I don’t know what compelled me to reach out at the last minute but I didn’t believe I had done it with free will. Something had forced me into action beyond my imagination. It was almost a spiritual awakening. Most would contribute it to the flight or fight instinct kicking in.

“I might have overreacted,” James admitted without looking at me.

“Would you listen to Captain Obvious? We were very lucky. I don’t know about you but I’m no longer going to let life push me around. That includes my sister. I think it’s time for her to seek out some help before it’s too late. This time I’m not taking no for an answer,” I replied with my hand on the dashboard.

I was trying to stop them from twitching uncontrollably.

He pried his fingers away from the steering wheel and sat back with a sigh. “I was reluctant to get involved with the product precisely for this reason. They gave me their assurances nobody was going to get hurt. I just hope this isn’t a case of one hand not knowing what the other one is doing. That journalist was just doing his job.”

“That’s true but there is a right way of going about it. Ambushing us in the car is what I call shock journalism. He didn’t want to give you a chance to come up with a plausible story. Unfortunately, you played right into his hand by becoming belligerent and driving away,” I answered with my body vibrating and my heart was hammering in my chest.

“I have to admit it was exciting.
