Official Ashford Police report:
Submitted by Officer Isaac McQuarters
May 24th -
Case #344712968: At 1:23 Mr. Thomas Braham entered the Ashford police department seeking assistance. Mr. Braham presented himself as rational, but his face looked aghast. With no baseline to compare, I observed he had no color to his skin. Mr. Braham had dilated pupils and his hands shook. Mr. Braham was dripping with sweat as he traveled hurriedly on foot. He stated that there was a disturbance at 1805 Montclair St, the residence of Mrs. Charlotte Bethel. Officer Williams and myself responded to his call for service.
When we arrived, there was a thin pillar of smoke escaping from the West end of the house. Officer Williams rushed off to contact the fire brigade. I concluded that there was not a bellowing fire and decided it was safe enough to enter the residence. Mr. Braham informed that when he departed for help Mrs. Bethel and his acquaintance, a Mr. John Doyle, were in the house. Prior to his leaving, he did not witness a fire within the residence.
Upon entering, I quickly did a room-to-room search but came up empty. The air was clear on the ground level. I heard a voice echoing from the second floor, and I ascended the main stairway. There was a veil of smoke, and I used a handkerchief to cover my face. When I reached the landing, I saw Mr. Doyle attempting to usher Mrs. Bethel from one of the bedrooms. The flickering of flames from within the room immediately caught my attention. It was not a roaring fire, but it had the potential to grow rapidly. I announced myself. Mrs. Bethel had wild, darting eyes and talked incoherently and did not seem to understand my instruction for evacuation. With the help of Mr. Doyle, we each took her by an arm and carefully led her downstairs and out the house. She did not put up much resistance but continued to talk nonsensically. Once outside, it was determined that there was no other person in need of rescue, however, Mr. Doyle explained that Mrs. Bethelâs daughter, Cordelia had just expired and her body was still in the house. Doyle appeared calm. Confident that the fire brigade would arrive in a few moments, I did not investigate further until the scene was deemed safe.
When the fire was being extinguished, Officer Williams escorted Mr. Braham and Mr. Doyle back to the station for questioning. After 45-minutes, the scene was safe enough to investigate. Cordelia remained unaccounted for, so she was my first priority.
Mr. Doyle had previously informed me the specific bedroom in which to look. The fourth bedroom at the end of the hall on the second floor housed the aforementioned deceased. Cordelia Bethel lay five feet from the door with a single gunshot wound to the head. She lay on her side in a loose fetal position. There are two notes of interest. I was shocked of the astonishing lack of blood. Cordelia had a mortal gunshot
