Chapter 4

Donald wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do with all this free time on his hands. His mom used to tell him that was when he did his worse planning. When he didn’t have shit to occupy his mind and keep his hands busy.

Jail life wasn’t for him. It never had been. Not liking to share his cell with someone was bad enough, but this system made you all eat in one common room rather than eating alone in your cell. He just hated it when people who didn’t have shit to do with things decided to change things around to suit them. Like they had to justify their existence or validate their paychecks.

He wanted to have his food brought to him instead of standing in line to get whatever they flopped onto his tray. Even with all the food that they had left over, they didn’t allow seconds unless you cleaned your plate completely. Like he was going to be eating shit like broccoli when there was stuff like cakes and mashed up potatoes shit that he loved. That was something else that he hated. When people didn’t offer up some kind of menu when you had to be in the system. Smiling to himself, he thought that if they’d just leave him alone to do his thing, they’d not have to hear about his wants and dislikes.

“Are you going to eat that?” Ignoring the man to his left of him, Donald put his hand around his tray to show that he wasn’t going to share shit. “You’re a selfish prick, aren’t you?”

“Fuck off.” The man across from him laughed. “What the hell do you think is so funny? Do you want me to beat the shit out of you?”

“Sure, you go ahead and try that. In the meantime, you should know that there are some changes in your niece’s life that will make your life a living hell if you bother her. I’m here just to inform you of what those changes are so that you don’t get yourself ended by breaking my rules concerning her and that lovely little family that she had” He asked him what he was talking about. “She’s under my protection. Well, under my family’s protection. You might want to listen up so that you can live another day or two when you get out of here.”

“Who are you talking to?” The man to his left looked confused when he pointed to the man across from him. “There ain’t nobody there, dumbass. You’re going to be in the hothouse if you keep this up. They don’t care for crazy shit around here. Just go on and give me that bread of yours, and I’ll forget that I heard you talking out of your face.”

“He’s sitting right there.” Donald looked at the man. It only just occurred to him that he was wearing a fancy shirt and tie. Also, he was cleaned up. Like he’d done his three ‘S’s this morning. Shower, shit and shaved.
