‘What about television? Do the cottages come with one?’

‘Yes they do,’ replied Nicky.

‘Hey! I could bring that old video recorder we have in the attic. It’s a bit temperamental but it works.’

‘Well that would be perfect. I’ve got a whole selection of lesbian videos I’m sure you’d love.’

‘Oh lets do it! Let’s just do it and sod the consequences! It would be worth any kind of hassle with Dermot to have a week like that.’

CHAPTER 6

The thirtieth of November was only seven days away. Hillary spent a happy and frenzied week collecting all the things she thought they would need in the cottage. It was like preparing for a life together but in miniature. Seven wrapped fire lighters. Two bags of small logs which she had cut and dried on the range. Five turf briquettes in another bag to get the first fire going. A little bottle of cooking oil she had dispensed from the big bottle. A little bottle of fabric softener. Seven washing powder tablets. Sachets of ketchup, salt and vinegar which she had saved from trips to fast food outlets. Toilet rolls, tissues and bin-bags. Teabags and small individual cartons of orange juice. A packet of digestives and a six pack of Kit-Kats. She sang as she assembled these things and laughed to herself when she thought what Dermot would have made of this collection if he had found it.
