HOLLYWOOD HOT SPOT
Ashlynn perked up when she saw the restaurant. “You know who goes to this restaurant?” she said, and then started naming celebrities. Some I knew and some I didn’t.
“I hope we see some celebrities tonight!” I said.
“I know!” Ashlynn smiled at me and I smiled back. We had a moment of solidarity—well, less than a moment. Ashlynn dropped her smile and then assumed her usual snooty look. I looked away.
“Of course, tons of celebrities are in New York City, where I live, so it’s not that big a deal,” Ashlynn said. “Plus, soon I’ll be on Broadway, and then I’ll be a celebrity.”
My father gave me a quizzical look. Yep, get the picture, Dad? But even Ashlynn couldn’t dampen my excitement as we walked into the restaurant.
“How cool is this, Emma? We’re going to a Hollywood hot spot,” I said as we walked in together. “And how cool is Zoe? She totally knows so much about the entertainment business.”
“Try to get a seat next to her,” Emma advised me. “It’s never too early to explore career possibilities. Remember when the mathematician came in on third grade parents’ career day and I picked her brain?”
How could I forget? The teacher had to ask Emma twice to stop monopolizing the Q&A time and then practically had to pry Emma off the woman’s leg.
“And let’s both try to avoid sitting next to Ashlynn,” Emma said. Agreed!
However, that turned out to be impossible because it ended up there was only one person joining us: a man named George who worked at the Teen Scene shampoo company. We sat at a long table, with me, Emma, and Ashlynn on one side and Dad, George, and Zoe on the other.
“Thank you for having us,” Emma said to George.
“We’re having so much fun!” I told him. “This is an amazing opportunity!”
“We wanted to treat you for your hard work today. And we thought you three girls might enjoy spending some time together,” George said. “Lewis sends his regards, but he is editing tonight.”
We ordered our food. I got penne with chicken and alfredo sauce, Emma got linguini with clam sauce, and Ashlynn ordered a shrimp Caesar salad. The server brought out bread with olive oil and we started nibbling.
It turned out George was a vice president of marketing and sales, which is what our dad is, so they got in a big bonding session over the state of the industry blah blah finances.
“So, Zoe, what exactly does a handler do?” I asked Zoe. She gave us a full-out description. It was fascinating! Celebrities! Events! Backstage scoop!
“So, Payton, are you going back to camp this year?” Ashlynn suddenly startled me by interrupting us.
“Um,” I said, turning away from Zoe. “I don’t know yet.”
“I am. But I’m also going to this musical theater camp where famous producers come and I might get discovered and—” Ashlynn went on and on. Zoe turned to Dad and George and started talking.
“So, Ashlynn,” Emma finally interrupted Ashlynn’s monologue. “I noticed you didn’t film anything today.
