The minute I get home, Carley knows something’s wrong. No doubt thanks to my red, puffy eyes. After I tell her what happened, I half expect her to jump into her car and drive over to Eli’s place and kick him in the–– Well, kick him. But that’s not what she does. Instead of getting angry and violent, she shrugs and says, “Parents are weird.”

That’s the understatement of the year, at least as it relates to her parents. Her dad specifically.

“So you’re okay with him referring to me as a puck bunny?”

“No. I’m not. But maybe he was trying to protect you or something. I mean, it sounds like his dad’s a real asshole.”

“It’s not right.”

“Really?” She arches her perfectly plucked brow at me. “Was it really that bad? Why don’t you let him explain everything before you break up with him again?”

Break up with him again? I’ve never broken up with him because before last night, I didn’t think there was anything to break up with.

“You like him. He likes you. A lot. You just made up. Sure, he was a jerk for not giving you a heads-up about his dad, but Cody said it was a surprise visit. Eli wouldn’t have been prepared.”

“It’s… it’s just…”

“What? It’s just shitty? Sad?” Carley reaches out and squeezes my hand. “Relationships are hard. You have to work on them and cut the guy some slack. If you don’t, you’ll never be able to stick with a guy because I’ve got a little secret for you.”

Ooh, a secret. I nod like a fool.

“Guys are idiots. They fuck up all the time. Like all the time. So, if you like this guy, wait and see what he does. If he’s really sorry, he’ll show up here on his hands and knees, begging you for forgiveness.” Her face softens. “You gave him back his hockey jersey?”

Carley saw me come in with Cody. The two of them mumbled something to each other and she returned to her bedroom. I have no idea what any of that meant. Anyway, I quickly ran into my room and changed out of Eli’s hockey shirt and handed it back to Cody. According to Cody, that was Eli’s actual playing jersey and he needed it back for their game this week.
