Chapter 26

Catherine let Anna drive for a few minutes before she said, ‘He’s got a record, you know.’

Back in Worthy’s office, they’d decided that it would better if Catherine interviewed Rob on her own to avoid any conflict of interest.

Anna hesitated. ‘Sorry?’

‘Rob Hunter. He’s been out of prison less than a week.’

Changing gear, Anna reddened a little. ‘It doesn’t surprise me. How do you know?’

‘He told me. It’s only his third day at Worthy and Son, so he didn’t have much else to say. He says he’s never spoken to Lauren.’

‘Don’t you believe him?’

Catherine shrugged, gazing out of the window. ‘I’ve no reason not to. He’s determined to go straight apparently. John Worthy agreed to give him a job as part of his probation.’

‘That’s generous.’

‘How well did you know him?’

‘Rob?’ Anna was blushing now. ‘Very well.’

‘Really?’

Anna nodded. ‘He was my first proper boyfriend.’

‘Okay.’

‘We went out for a couple of years, only split up because… well, I knew I wanted to join the force and Rob wasn’t a big fan of the police, even then.’

‘A couple of years? Sounds serious.’

‘You know what it’s like at that age, Sarge; you think no one’s been in love before. Then Rob started being mates with older blokes, flashing loads of money around. It didn’t take a genius to work out what he was up to was dodgy.’

‘So you split up?’

‘I told him I wasn’t going to be with a criminal and it turned out he preferred his new mates to me. I applied to join the force, stayed away from places I knew he might be. He wanted another chance, but I knew it wouldn’t work, not with the things I thought he was getting up to going on.’

‘He was done for robbery, served eighteen months in prison,’ Catherine told her.

Anna sighed. ‘Idiot.’

‘He got drunk with a gang of mates. They went into a pizza place and threatened to burn it down if the blokes working there didn’t hand over the takings. There was a CCTV camera in the shop and it picked them up as clear as day. Hunter didn’t actually threaten anyone, he just stood there, but…’

‘It’s enough.’

‘Yeah. They got away with less than a hundred quid between five of them. The shop closed down after that because the brothers who ran it were too scared to stay in town.’

Anna made a noise of disgust as she stopped at a red light. ‘I thought you were going to say it was some sort of car crime.’

‘Cars?’

‘Rob was always into them and his dad’s a mechanic, a decent one as far as I know.’ The lights changed and Anna glanced in her rear-view mirror as she accelerated.

‘It’s not to say he hasn’t been involved in car crime too,’ Catherine pointed out.

‘It sounds as if he was quite open about having been in prison.’

‘Yeah, not boastful though, just matter-of-fact. He said he’s pleased you’re doing well for yourself.’

The blush stained Anna’s cheeks again. ‘None of his business.’

They were almost back at the station.

‘What about drugs?’

‘Not when I knew him.
