CHAPTER SIX
Brenner
âHey, so tell me about your brotherâs wedding.â
âWhat do you want to know?â
She smiles. âIs it a big wedding or a small wedding? Formal or semi-formal?â
âI honestly donât know,â I tell her and grab my second slice of pizza.
Her brows lift. âI take it the two of you arenât close?â
âItâs complicated. And since youâre my date for the event, I should probably tell you heâs marrying my ex-girlfriend.â
She nearly chokes on her wine and the sheet she has wrapped around her slips, giving me a fabulous view of her tits. âWhat? Who? Thatâs something out of a rom-com.â
âYeah, itâs fucking awkward. I donât want to go, but Iâm trying to be a good sport about it for Mom. And the who is Claire Delano.â
âThatâs tough. I wouldnât want to be in that situation.â
I stare at her kiss-swollen lips. âWell, having you there will make it . . . tolerable.â
Lark shoves at my shoulder. âTolerable. Youâre an ass.â
I catch her by the waist and pull her onto my lap. âYouâve got a great ass.â
Her hands frame my face, then she kisses me. It speaks volumes, but she doesnât let her actions speak for her. Lark puts all her thoughts into words. Fearless and unapologetic. I could fall for her easily. If I havenât already.
âIâm considering relocating. I hate New York winters, and Iâd like to be closer to Mom.â
âSo, youâre thinking about California?â
I wink. âDreaming about it, actually.â
âItâs a big risk,â she whispers.
âOne Iâm willing to take.â I owe her honesty at the very least.
âIs there more to thisââshe gestures between usââthan just sex?â
Breathing in her scent, I push my nose into her hair. âI hope so. I fucking hope so, Lark.â
âItâll be challenging, Iâm training for Tokyo, and youâre . . . job hunting?â
All thatâs true. But Lark is all Iâve wanted from the first moment I laid eyes on her.
âDo you want to give the two of us a serious try?â
Terrified she doesnât want the same thing I do. Seconds feel like minutes. She hasnât said anything, and my heart hammers in my chest.
âIâm a little scared,â her voice cracks, echoing the feeling in my chest.
âMe too,â I admit. âI want to make it work with you. More than anything, I want you.â
âSame. I want you. Letâs tryâus.â Lark stands and pulls me to my feet. âTake me back to bed, right now.â
Her eyes are more green than brown, like the water out her back door, and I want to swim in them.
Maybe forever.
