NOBODY SPOKE MUCH FOR the next hour as they watched hundreds of individuals placing single red roses on a couple of old gurneys the hospital staff had unearthed from a storage room, and wheeled outside. Brother Damien led the prayers and singing, interspersed by the occasional bible or poetry reading. One of Dorothy’s former work colleagues from Premier recited a poem which was one her favourites. The woman barely managed to finish the final verse before she broke down, and had to be led away by her husband and son.

‘They’re behaving as if she’s already dead,’ said a small voice. They had been so focused on the screen, none of them had realised Diane was standing in the hall watching the vigil. Her face was deathly pale, and her whole body trembled as she observed the scenes on the TV.

‘Nobody believes she’s going to wake up, that’s why they’re so upset.’ Her voice faltered, and she buckled at the knees. Jack leaped to his feet to catch her, but at that moment a voice was heard from further down the hall calling, ‘Twiglet!’

With his hair windswept, and a day’s growth of stubble on his wide jaw, Nelson Kirwan-Taylor strode down the corridor wearing a very expensive leather jacket, and carrying a backpack over one shoulder.

Diane’s knees instantly straightened and she swung around. ‘Nellie!’ she screamed, and ran to meet him. Nelson barely had time to fling his backpack away and shed his jacket before she reached him. He caught her with both hands and lifted her so she could wrap her legs around his torso. ‘Oh, Nellie,’ she wailed, and buried her face in his shoulder.

Carrying his precious burden, Nelson strode towards the group, nodding to his brother on the way. ‘Greetings all. Could one of you chaps fetch me a blanket?’ he asked politely, taking a seat near Jack and Marco. Aonghus ran off to fetch one from the closest assigned room, and Nelson accepted it with a word of thanks. He rearranged Diane on his lap, and tucked the fleecy fabric around her as if she was a baby. When she was securely wrapped, he pulled her firmly against his body and enfolded her in his strong embrace.

‘You’re not alone, Twiglet,’ he murmured. ‘I’ve got you.’ Diane emitted one loud sob before closing her eyes and remaining silent.

James walked up carrying the backpack and jacket. He set the bag down near his brother’s chair and hung the jacket on the back. At a look from Keith, Jonjo jumped up and went to relieve Clive of door duty. The Welshman hurried to join his partner in time to hear James say, ‘I thought you’d get here sooner.’

Nelson snorted in exasperation. ‘As did I, brother, as did I. Alas, circumstances threw a spanner in the works. Sylvester Sinclair only went and had a massive bloody coronary in the wee hours. I’ve spent most of the day in Guys Hospital, instead of here where I belong.’

‘How the hell did you get dragged into all that?’ James scowled.
