Attractive shelters may already be inhabited. Be watchful for returning occupants.

DO: GET out of the sun.

DO: REDUCE the sun’s impact by situating shelter with a northern exposure in the Northern Hemisphere, and the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere.

DO: REDUCE the bite of wind by positioning shelter openings at a 90-degree angle to prevailing air flow.

DO: MAKE shelter within a short walk of a water source.

DON’T: PLACE shelter in a riverbed or flood plain; in cool, damp places (favored by snakes and scorpions); or along game trails.

DON’T: SETTLE into a shelter without checking for pests. They may appear after you’ve settled in, so stay alert until you’ve been there for awhile.

DON’T: MAKE camp in a mine shaft.
