Summoning Death. Like Iâd Ever Do That on Purpose
I couldnât stop smiling. I wore a dusty and ripped school uniform Vlad had found somewhere in the crypt. Maybe heâd taken it off a corpse. The red plaid skirt was really dowdy, but I didnât care. How could I care about something like that?
âYouâre happy,â Ruffles said, settling down next to me in History.
âBowling with vampires. This school doesnât suck nearly as bad as I thought it would.â
âYouâve gone two days,â Greg said in his deep, rocky growl.
âI should go more. We need to finish your story,â I said to Ruffles and patted her hand which was weird because my hand went right through hers. She didnât seem to mind.
âAre you dating Vlad?â Ruffles asked, leaning closer.
âSh!â
She giggled. âNo one else can hear me.â
âQuiet in the back,â the professor said, shooting her a glare.
She smiled back sweetly before whispering out of the side of her mouth, âI heard that you guys had a huge fight, like you almost ripped his head off. Literally. Iâm glad you guys made up.â
âIt wasnât like that.â I pulled out my notebook and tried to follow the lecture. It was so boring. I stared at the professor and zoned out, remembering how it felt to fight off vampires with Vlad.
âYou have that silly little smile.â Ruffles said and then sighed dreamily. âItâs like heâs your Civil War soldier.â
âRebel or Confederate?â
âEither way.â
âAs long as theyâre crawling with maggots.â
She nodded and then broke into delighted giggles.
In PE, I was ready to play some serious soccer. Iâd found some cleats in the room of abandoned and desolate relics. I was scraped up pretty bad from the vampire bowling. I didnât mind a single one.
On the field, I noticed Ray and her white parasol. She had a pout on her dark mouth. She looked a little more peaked than earlier. Maybe Dave had snacked on her to regain his strength.
I grabbed a ball from the side and started doing drills. The ratty skirt and my scraped legs were seriously sexy. I laughed as I chased the ball around a headstone.
Long legs stole the ball. I followed those long legs up the rest of him. Vlad was wearing a shirt, white button-up with black jacket. It was a school uniform, not the long coat thing.
âArenât you going to be on my team today?â I asked.
He bit his bottom lip. No fangs. âI donât know how interesting that will be. Youâre the only one who cares.â
I shrugged. âAll right, but in that case youâre going down. Again.â
âGregâs going to be on your team?â
âNo, but I have a whole field of headstones. Iâm going to put bright colors on them. Itâs going to drive you to distraction.â
âThat sounds pretty terrible. I guess thereâs no choice but for us to play on the same team. I guess we could weave through the unmotivated students and headstones, passing the ball back and forth. You could try to kick the ball into the actual goal.â
âOoh. Big plans.
