Watching Porn Is a Guy Thing

In 2009, researchers in Montreal were trying to do a study of men in their twenties. They wanted to compare the view of men who had never watched pornography to those who regularly did. There was one problem. They couldn’t find a single man who had never watched porn.

This was a small study, and these results were repeated for the most part only in the lay media, but they perpetuate two stereotypes: 1) all men watch porn, and 2) porn is a guy thing.

Let’s start with the first question. How many men do watch porn? One of the most comprehensive studies around was just recently published, and used data from the General Social Survey, which is a massive national survey funded by the National Science Foundation that has been collecting data on social beliefs and behaviors of people in the United States since 1973. Researchers took a look at results from this survey from then until 2010. Over the nearly three decades, that included more than 14,000 males in the United States.

Now, before we look at the results, it’s time for some truth. We totally believed that the results of the Montreal researchers would have been proven true writ large. Have you been on the Internet lately? Some days it seems impossible not to see porn. But we were willing to put aside our biases and look at the evidence.

We were shocked. In 2010, only 36 percent of men reported having watched at least one pornographic film in the last year. In 1973, that number was 31 percent. With some minor fluctuations to a low of 20 percent in 1980 and a high of 30 percent in 1987, that number hasn’t changed that much. Over all the years, the percent of men who responded affirmatively was about 32 percent.

When you look at these numbers, one thing you have to remember is that lots of men are older men. And the older you are, the less likely you are to watch pornography. Whites are slightly less likely to consume pornography than males in minority groups. And people who are more religious are slightly less likely to watch pornography as well.

This isn’t to say that pornography isn’t a huge business. Video pornography was generating more than $10 billion a year more than a decade ago. That number has only increased since then.

So are these low numbers even possible? Doesn’t everyone watch porn?

It turns out the answer is no. In 2005, researchers reported that only 14 percent of people reported ever having explicitly visited a sexual Web site. We know that sounds hard to believe. You have to remember, though, that the Internet use skews young. It’s likely your grandparents aren’t trolling the Web for porn. Lots of people are in that age demographic. And even among younger people, it’s not as frequent as conventional wisdom might have you believe. A 2007 study conducted by researchers in New Hampshire surveyed 1,500 Internet users between the ages of ten and seventeen years of age.
