AS IT TURNED out, Marleyâs fear was more of a barrier than either of them anticipated.
âIâm going to fall. Iâm going to fall,â Marley whimpered as she tried to peddle with little success. The bike kept weaving violently and unsteadily from side to side.
âYou wonât fall,â Sebastian puffed as he used all his strength to keep the bike from tilting to the other side and spilling her to the hard concrete. âI got you.â
âI canât⦠I canât⦠I canât,â she whimpered, her breathing as broken as her words. Her face was stiff with terror and her grip on the handlebars was so tight it was a wonder they hadnât broken yet.
âTrust me, Marley. You can do this.â He instructed, âDonât be so stiff. Try to keep your peddling steady and donât hold the bars so tightly.â
âIâm trying.â Her voice shook as if she was on the verge of crying. âIâm trying but itâs not working.â
âIt will.â He kept a firm hold on her and the unsteady bike. âTrust me.â
Despite her incessant attempts to stop, Sebastian kept assuring her that she could learn. After about an hour of false starts and near falls, she got the hang of it.
âThere you go,â Sebastian encouraged. Heâd now moved from holding the handlebars and walking beside her to just touching the saddle lightly to make sure he could catch her if she fell. âSee, youâre doing it.â
âYou havenât let go, right?â Marley snatched a nervous backward look at him. Though the bike was now steady, her peddling was still hesitant.
âNo, I havenât let go. Iâm still holding the bike,â he assured even as he slowly let go. âYou can do it.â
Marley didnât notice that heâd let go. She kept moving forward on her own for quite a while until he was left several feet behind her. She only noticed that he was gone when she stopped the bike with her foot on the ground. The betrayal that filled her expression when she turned and found him missing was priceless. Laughing, he walked to her.
âYou lied to me,â she accused when he finally reached her.
âAnd arenât you glad I did?â He grinned. âLook, you rode it all on your own without my help.â
But his words werenât enough to soothe her. She glared at him sulkily. But even while sulking and glaring, she was adorable. Still grinning, he moved closer to envelop her in a side hug. In an instant, her sweet, sandal wood-like smell and her heat warmed his body and stirred his senses.
âIâm sorry,â he murmured, drawing in a deeper breath so he could have more of her scent.
Though Marley was stiff in his arms, she didnât move away. Soon, she relaxed into his body. âItâs okay. Iâll forgive you.â
Though reluctant to let her go, Sebastian moved away from her. âWanna try again? Iâll let go again, but this time Iâll let you know before I do it.â
Reluctance and anxiety flashed in Marleyâs gaze. It looked like she was going to turn down the suggestion.
