Chapter 17 - Trina
I stared at the wall of my bedroom, my head on my pillow with my hand tucked underneath it. Late evening sunlight filtered in past the blinds, and I watched as the dust floated around in the streaks of orange. It was Monday, and I had missed a day of school. Not something that I usually wanted to do, especially during my senior year.
I was going to have to stop staying up all night to break up werewolf fights.
Eventually, my eyes drifted to the bracelet sitting on my nightstand.
I had wanted to help so much and then had gotten super excited that something I could do had helped. The possibilities were dazzling to think of all the items I could come up with to help ghosts and people communicate. Like, I could have piles of glasses laying around, and when someone had trouble with a ghost, they could use a pair and solve the whole thing. Of course, there were the dangers that came along with that. Hanna had all but confirmed with Rose that sheâd killed our Gran trying to get access to the glasses.
Caleb had later filled me in on more of what happened that night, telling me that Gran and Rose had fought in the front room while little Hanna was only a few feet away in the kitchen. Caleb had been too worried about defending the child, like he knew Gran would want him to, that he was unable to stop Rose from firing the bullet that took Granâs life. Caleb had lived with that pain and guilt for many years, and even though heâd been able to get some closure with Granâs ghost and helping her grandchildren, the memory still haunted him.
Oh, Caleb. Poor guy. Heâd shown me a side of himself that others rarely got to see. Yes, he was a broad-shouldered, hunky, and sometimes a brooding, blood-sucking vampire, but he was also fiercely loyal to those he loved and had a strong sense of morality.
I really hoped we would be able to figure out how to set him free. The only solution may have been Roseâs death, and I was slowly becoming more and more okay with that.
Iâd taken a several-hours-long nap and awoken to feelings of disappointment and inadequacy. I was getting sick of feeling this way. I knew Hanna hadnât meant to make me feel bad or take the wind out of my sails. She was simply trying to make sure we didnât accidentally hurt someone else. It was, admittedly, slightly alarming to learn that once the ghost put on the bracelet, they couldnât take it off. But that didnât mean we shouldnât use it.
I was willing to bet my sneakers on the fact that, given the choice, most ghosts would prefer to have a physical body again. It was tempting to try the bracelet out on someone less âimportantâ than Brandon to make sure it didnât turn them into a poltergeist, but that had its own pile of ethical issues I wasnât about to play with.
