Chapter Ten

Lily

Tonight is officially Halloween. North told me earlier to enjoy the spooky vibes, because come morning, the entire town will be packed up as if nothing ever happened, and the town square will be ready for the cook-off. Apparently, a lady named Anabelle wins the bake-off every year with her famous blueberry pie, and Samuel and Joel go head-to-head with their smoked meat. If I’m being honest, I’m excited to buy some of the food, which they sell at the end of every day after the judges get their portion.

As I walk through the town square, I see kids trick-or-treating. I managed to find a set of angel wings at the thrift store, and I knew they would go perfectly with the sexy little white dress I’m rocking that I bought ages ago to wear to a sorority party.

“Lily,” a voice calls from behind, and I turn to see a short woman chasing me. She stops next to me and puts her hands on her knees. “You’re fast for a woman in heels.”

I smile at her. She looks like she dressed up as Mrs. Potts from Beauty and the Beast. “Sorry, I didn’t hear you until just now.”

“That’s okay, I haven’t had the chance to introduce myself yet. I’m Mrs. Morgan, and my husband is the mayor. We wanted to ask if you’d like to be a judge at the upcoming cook-off. We took a vote at the town meeting, and everyone thinks you would be perfect. You have no history with the winners and would be a fresh slate.”

“Oh, I would love to,” I reply. Since I plan on staying, I should get a little more involved. “And there was a town meeting?”

“Yes, dear. We have them on the last Monday of every month. Everyone is welcome to attend. My grandson Tom was supposed to invite you along. I guess the boy forgot.”

“I guess so. What do I need to do to be a judge?”

“Oh, that’s easy. Every night this week at six, the judges sample each entrant’s food and give it a score. Then on Saturday the top three in each category battle it out and winners are announced.”

“I can do that, Mrs. Morgan. I will see you tomorrow night.”

She smiles and waves at me as I wander off around the town square. I watch the children run around to each stall, while parents chase some of the smaller children through the mazes. I really love how they have everything set up here; there’s an overwhelming sense of community spirit.

The line to the cotton candy has gone down and I quickly join the end. A group of high school aged girls are huddled in front of me, and I can’t help but overhear their conversation.

“Come on, Betty. We all signed up for the hide-and-seek. Rumor has it that Harlen will be one of those seeking tonight, and how hot is he?!”

“Seriously, Melody, you really think someone like Harlen would want a high school girl?”

“You know they’re all together, right? They don’t even like girls.
