Flesh & Bones & Batteries

Why do so many of us seek immediate gratification?

Picture this:

It’s a cool, autumn Saturday night in October. The guy you’ve been dating since Labor Day has invited you over to his townhouse for dinner with some of his friends. You like this guy. You’ve had fun together. He’s smart, ambitious, and funny. You look forward to meeting his friends.

You ring the doorbell and he kisses you hello, takes your coat, and quickly introduces you to the couple who arrived just before. Trying not to be too obvious, you look around. You’re impressed. His home is neat and nicely decorated. The books in his bookcase are even interesting.

Everyone has arrived. Dinner is served. His friends seem nice and easygoing. The food is delicious, you’re complimented on the salad you brought, and the conversation is entertaining.

Dessert is brought out. You lean over to the object of your increasing affection and ask to use his bathroom. He looks a little embarrassed when he says that the one on the first floor is broken, then directs you to his second floor. You go up the stairs, turn down a long hallway, and pass a closet, the door of which is slightly ajar. You can see that it’s filled with sports equipment. Next to it, there’s a room that looks like an office, with a metal desk, a swivel chair, a framed Picasso print you recognize from a college art history class, and large windows that promise an incredible view of the city. You can’t help yourself. You step inside for a closer look. It’s gorgeous. The city looks like a postcard. The view was worth that small intrusion on his privacy. You turn back to leave, and WHOA!

What the—

She’s staring at you.

And she’s naked.

Holy synthetics and silicon. The guy you’ve been kissing has also been kissing a life-sized sex doll.

This isn’t my story, and it may not be yours. But it sure as hell could be.
