The superintendent dropped my key off while I was in the shower. I should be grateful for it. The opportunity to distance myself from Buchanan and our conversation, especially with how it ended. In a way, I guess I am. After slipping on the change of clothes he left for me on his bed, I went back to my place, but the relief I usually feel in solitude is missing. Instead, I feel…like a shaken-up can of soda. Like I messed up, and I don’t know how to fix it, even when there’s nothing to fix in the first place.

Part of me wonders if I should’ve told him the truth. If I should’ve opened up to him. If I should’ve told him I gave all my OF earnings to my uncle’s charity instead of keeping it. If I should’ve admitted what happened with Shorty while we were dating.

Instead, I clammed up and pushed him away, making him feel like he’s nothing but a dick for me to use.

I was weak. Pathetic, even. Too ashamed to tell him the truth or why I’m so resentful of the opposite sex.

Annoyance tugs at me. I should probably change into my own clothing and wash Buchanan’s T-shirt and sweats so I can return them. Instead, I lift the collar of his worn T-shirt to my nose and breathe in deeply.

It smells like him.

I used his body wash and shampoo, so my entire body is engulfed in his scent. But I like it.

I like it a lot, actually.

My phone rings, and I drop the collar of Buchanan’s shirt like I’ve been caught doing something I shouldn’t and pull my cell out of my pocket. Ashlyn’s calling.

Pinning it between my shoulder and ear, I say, “Hey.”

“Hey! Long time no see. Want to get together for a girls’ night?”

Relief washes over me, and I nod. “Yeah, I’m in. Are Kate and Blake free too?”

“Yup! Do you want to come to my place, or do you want me and the girls to come to you?”

“Let’s do yours,” I offer.

“Still afraid to show your place to Kate and Blake?” Ash questions.

The girl knows me too well.

Reaching for the laundry detergent, I scoop a small amount into the machine and argue, “No, I just figured your place is closer to everyone else.”

“Mm-hmm,” Ash hums. “Sure.”

“And your place has chairs and a couch,” I add.

“Hey, if I can sit criss-cross-applesauce on the floor, I’m sure Blake and Kate can too.”

“Okay, fine.” I slap the washer door closed and lean my hip against it. “Why don’t you guys come here?”

“Yay!” Her squeal makes me laugh, and I pull my phone away from my ear. “Okay, perfect. We’ll see you in an hour. I’ll call and let everyone else know.”

“Fiiiine,” I drag out, then hang up the phone and grudgingly strip off Buchanan’s clothes, knowing Ashlyn will grill me if she finds me wearing them. After adding the small pile to the machine, I press the start button, head to my bedroom, and slip on some yoga pants and a Broken Vows T-shirt.
