Death has always been a cruel mistress.

One of the worst parts of living long enough to see centuries come and go was the inevitability of death and the existential crisis that comes with living amidst people who had shorter lives than our marriages.

However bleak that might be, though, it was nothing compared to when we had to deal with one of our own. There weren’t many ways to kill a witch in broad daylight that didn’t involve swift blades or covert, fast working poisons. But catching someone off guard with a heinous magical talent usually did the trick.

It was sneaky, underhanded, and lacked all honor.

And that was exactly what he was fighting for.

The fucking bastard.

I ran my thumb over the face of this witch, barely a man, and my heart ached. He was so young, truly young. And while my paramour may or may not have cast the spell that ended him, he was just as guilty. They were his acolytes after all.

“I think that’s the last mark,” I said, feeling feeble and wiping my brow in the hot kitchen, surrounded by several other witches in various steps of their own projects.

One of them was chanting, burning some kind of leaf which smelled like a slightly spicy peppermint. Another was drawing runes on the boy’s body. A final coven member was talking softly with the youth’s family, comforting them in words I couldn’t hear.

“You’ve been ever so helpful, coven master,” the witch Bea had called Sarah said to me. “We thank you for your gifts.”

“I only wish I could have done more,” I confessed. Using my cosmetic modification magic to restore his pretty face was nothing compared to what I could have done if I hadn’t been giving a metaphorical middle finger to Eíren in the form of riding Maizy’s face.

Maizy…

I still couldn’t bring myself to find out what had transpired with her, was too much of a coward to reach out to her coven.

Too much of a coward to stop the man who did it.

I was weak to him, and always would be. That’s what happens when you obey someone’s every command while they cleverly make you think they’re obeying yours.

He was brilliant like that.

Machiavellian.

“I’m going to get some air,” I whispered to the room around me. No one responded, but that was for the best. I wouldn’t have known how to react to anything else.

I grabbed my coat off a big, cobalt blue armchair and pulled it on. November in England was no joke.

Today was brutal as I left the coven house to a confetti of frosty rain coming down. But the sting of it on my face was bearable to get away from all the people I was hurting without them even realizing it. Knowing all it would take was one flick of my wrist, and he’d be dead. One single, poisonous kiss…

But that was what he counted on—me never using my magic against him.

It was a good bet. I loved him more than I loved myself.
