CHAPTER ELEVEN

They were wed a sennight later, in an intimate ceremony at Ashton House. Their only guests consisted of Oliver, and his brother and sister-in-law. Michael experienced an overwhelming sense of relief when Amelia appeared in the drawing room, a small cluster of fresh flowers gathered from the garden and tied with ribbon clutched in her hands. A rose satin gown enlivened her complexion, and the matching crown of blossoms resting on top of her loose hair made her look like something out of a dream.

When her note had arrived at his inn, informing him of her decision to accept his suit, he had hardly been able to believe it. Standing here with her made it all real, and contentment swept through him as the recital of their vows began.

For a moment, he had feared his efforts might all come to naught. But with an exchange of words and rings, she became his—permanently. Sure, the wealth she brought with her would solve all of his problems back home. However, he now found that he would have mourned her loss, above all. With the morning light filtering through white lace curtains, and her cheeks and lips kissed by just a hint of rouge—causing her to appear deceptively innocent and charmingly alluring—he experienced a surge of pride at the knowledge that they belonged to each other.

Once news of their hasty wedding made its way through town, the gossip would spread like wildfire. Thankfully, they would not be here for the resulting fallout. Arrangements had been made for their return journey to Norfolk, and they would be on their way at the conclusion of the intimate wedding breakfast planned by the marchioness. Sophie, he must remember to think of her as Sophie—his sister-in-law now. Never would he have thought to be connected to such wealth and power, even through marriage. That aspect of his new union would take some growing used to.

Once vows had been exchanged, he slipped a beautiful sapphire ring onto her finger—a gift from Simon. It had once belonged to their mother, Lady Joanna. Sophie now wore one of similar design, hers sporting a red ruby. For him, a plain gold band sufficed.

The moment they’d been declared man and wife, he swept her into his arms and kissed her. She returned his ardor, gripping the lapels of his coat and coming up on tiptoe to meet his mouth with her own. Simon cleared his throat and shifted while Sophie giggled at the display of amorous affection.

“At this rate, they’ll never make it to the wedding breakfast,” the marquis grumbled.

“They had better, after all Cook and I went through to prepare,” Sophie declared, pushing herself between them to take Amelia into a tight hug. “Oh, I am so happy for you. Congratulations, sister.”

“Thank you,” Amelia had replied.

Michael was next to be crushed by Sophie’s surprisingly strong arms. Her excitement and sweet nature reminded him of his own sister, whom he hoped would get on well with Amelia. He shook hands with Simon, and together, they indulged in a champagne toast while waiting for the meal to be served.
