Back to the Mines

“I’m going to kill him next time that snake slithers by!” Allie yelled as they walked back home.

Dominic shared the same sentiment, Romeo disappeared at the first sign of trouble and as a result, Dominic ended up with a knife to his neck. Where he’d gone was anyone’s guess but it didn’t matter, it only proved that they couldn’t trust him. Luckily, Romeo’s disappearance did bear fruit, it led to the discovery that the crest of the key had something to do with the Orcus family. Whatever it opened most likely had something to do with the General. The only problem was, they’d wasted their one chance in the Academy and snooping around the General’s office now was impossible. He couldn’t justify going back there, by now word of the fight would have spread, ensuring Dominic would be closely monitored should he enter the Academy again. Besides, even if he did bypass security and the cameras, Levi would be breathing down his neck. The thought of Levi angered Dominic further. He had to restrain himself and let his enemy get the better of him. He instinctively touched his throat where the blade had menacingly pressed. He refused to let Levi get the better of him again.

Approaching his house, he noticed a hooded figure by Ralph’s pen. The man was feeding his horse a carrot. Hearing their footsteps in the gravel, the stranger turned, dropping their hood. It was Romeo.

“Hey guys,” he said cheerfully.

Dominic didn’t respond, instead he walked up to him, reared his arm back and punched Romeo in the face.

“Yeah, okay I deserved that.”

Dominic then grabbed Romeo and shoved him up against his house, causing it to shake unsteadily.

“We had a plan, and at the first sign of trouble you ran!” he growled.

“Let me explain myself before you Hulk out,” Romeo pleaded.

“What the hell is a Hulk!?” Dominic snarled.

“Dude you really need to break into the Hightown library and check out the comic section.”

“Get to the point!”

“Alright, just ease up,” he said tapping Dominic’s fists.

Dominic loosened his grip, waiting for an explanation.

“I uh, didn’t want to get carved up by Levi…”

Dominic shoved Romeo into his house again, letting him fall into the dirt below.

Romeo stood up, wiping his clothes only to receive a second punch, this time from Allie. “Dominic could’ve died because you were too scared to stand by your friends!”

“Okay, I’m sorry, but I do have a legitimate reason.”

Allie pulled her arm back again.

“Wait, wait, I’m being serious this time!”

“You have ten seconds, or I’ll feed you to the horse,” Allie growled.

Ralph neighed, taking a step back as if to say, ‘No thanks, I’m full.’

“The key didn’t work, did it?”

“How do you know that?” Dominic snarled.

“Levi’s belt had a knife—”

“Yeah, the same one he had around Dominic’s neck,” Allie interrupted.

“Okay, I’m sorry, but let me finish. The knife had the same crest as the key, it made me realise the symbol was the Orcus family crest.”

“So you left us to find that out the hard way?” Allie growled.
