Chapter 23

Ezra’s Prayers

Ezra’s arrival to Jerusalem is more in a reason with the spiritual aspects of his people. As the temple was being built with the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes, the spiritual conditions of the people were very poor. In Ezra chapter 1, we read the letter written by King Cyrus on the return of Jewish people to their land. Just as God said to Israel, they will be rooted out of their land if they forget God, which finally took place. First, the Assyrians took the northern kingdom out and dispersed them to settle in the middle east in different regions under their rule. Then, King Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah and took them captives in Babylon.

God visited his people in time and listened to their prayers and repentance and raised leaders in them who would lead them back to the country. God also demolished the powers of the Babylonians and was given the kingdom to Cyrus, king of Persia. God chose Cyrus to deliver his people and send them back to their own country. So it happened—Nehemiah the Jewish cupbearer of King Cyrus came first and built the walls of Jerusalem. King Cyrus sent Sheshbazzar with people and 5,400 articles of gold and silver (Ezra 1:11). Ezra chapter 1 explained how King Cyrus helped the return of Jews to Jerusalem with gold, silver, and all the utensils of the temple that King Nebuchadnezzar took away, with Levites, priests, and people.

Ezra 2:64 describes the number of people, slaves, servants, horses, and mules sent by King Cyrus to Jerusalem. Ezra chapters 4, 5, and 6 described the rebuilding of altars and temple, with some oppositions from certain officials who were in the Trans-Euphrates. The opposition was cleared by King Darius as he investigated the record of King Cyrus of his decree of rebuilding and returning the Israelites to their country.
