In the cathedral-like room, by the Eye of Harmony, the Master and Chang Lee watched as the Doctor’s face distorted, changing to a woman’s face.

‘At last,’ the Master whispered. ‘We’re seeing through the Doctor’s eyes. We can see where he is exactly.’

Chang Lee frowned. ‘I know that face … It’s the doctor from the hospital. The one I got the Doctor’s bag from.’

The face was frowning, speaking. Concentrating, Chang Lee realised he could hear her words, seeing and listening as he was from the Doctor’s point of view.

The image whited out, leaving nothing but stars, planets and comets. The universe as Chang Lee had seen it earlier. The Doctor had closed his eyes, Chang Lee guessed, but he could still hear their words.

‘What’s going on, Doctor?’ the woman from the hospital demanded.

‘The Eye of Harmony, it’s the power source at the very heart of the TARDIS.’

Chang Lee could hear as the woman took a deep breath. ‘Okay. Now then, what is a TARDIS?’

‘The TARDIS is my spaceship. It carries me through time and space. T-A-R-D-I-S, an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension In Space.’

Chang Lee was finding this almost as bizarre as he guessed the doctor from the hospital must find it.

‘And this “Master”,’ she was saying. ‘Is he like, the Devil?’

‘No,’ said the Doctor. ‘He’s a rival Time Lord.’

‘A Time Lord.’ The woman then spoke quietly. ‘Oh my God, you’re completely insane.’

‘No, I’m not. The Master is pure evil. I was taking his remains home to Gallifrey. In his final incarnation he had been captured by the Daleks, placed on trial and exterminated.’

‘And these Daleks? Are they Time Lords, too? Do they have spaceships like your TARDIS?’ The sarcasm was obvious.

The Doctor was ignoring her. ‘But he wasn’t dead. It’s all been a trap. A trap for me! He wants me to look into the Eye.’

‘So?’

‘So if I look into the Eye of Harmony, my soul will be destroyed. He will be free to take my body then.’

‘Listen to all those lies, my young friend.’ The Master was beside Chang Lee, hissing into his ear. ‘Can you believe this rubbish?’

‘No.’ Chang Lee was certain. ‘But how can she fall for it?’

‘Because,’ the Master replied, ‘he is pure evil. He is exerting his evil force over her. Manipulating all her thoughts and actions. Poor woman.’

‘Look,’ the doctor from the hospital was saying, her voice echoing around the starscape that Chang Lee was gazing intently at. ‘I’m afraid I really can’t deal with this.’

‘Please, Grace. Listen carefully—’

‘No,’ the woman, Grace apparently, shouted. ‘No. I’ve had enough.’

‘If the Eye of Harmony remains open for too long, this planet will be sucked through it.’ The Doctor was sounding desperate.

Chang Lee could hear why. What a load of rubbish.

The Doctor was still shouting at Grace. ‘I must fix the timing mechanism on the TARDIS so that I can close the Eye of Harmony. I need an atomic clock. Can you help me find one?’

There was no reply.

‘Grace?’

The image of the park suddenly burst back into the cathedral as the Doctor presumably opened his eyes.
