Claire smiled. It was good to be able to impart some information of her own for a change. 'He was a major, I think. But in civilian life even then he was a History don at Oxford. The allies had him put together a report into the death of Hitler. It's still the most detailed and probably the most accurate documentary evidence there is.'
The Brigadier nodded thoughtfully. 'We'll look at that after we've assessed the other stuff for ourselves then. Don't want to be led by his conclusions.' He pointed to the screen. 'What's the other file here?'
Claire shrugged and opened it. 'Seems to be translations of Russian stuff. Speeches, documents...' She gave a low whistle as she started to read.
Over her shoulder, the Brigadier was also reading. 'The Russians were the ones who took Berlin,' he said. 'So whatever they had to say is probably worth listening to.'
Claire nodded. 'Look at this - ninth of June. Marshal Zhukov, whoever he was, said: "We have not identified the body of Hitler."'
'Zhukov commanded one of the invading Russian armies.'
'Well he was talking bollocks,' Claire said. 'They knew they had Hitler.
They did a post-mortem for God's sake.'
'Did they? Isn't that what we're trying to find out?'
'Yes,' Claire said. 'OK, so they did a post mortem on someone.'
The Brigadier nodded. He pointed lower down the document. 'Here's a report that Stalin told President Truman at Potsdam that he thought Hitler was in Spain or Argentina.'
'He didn't know?' Claire wondered. 'Or did they just not want to tell anyone.'
The Brigadier shrugged. 'You can bet they didn't want to be wrong about it. On the other hand...' His voice tailed off. 'What else is there?'
'Not much' She scrolled down. 'Some official Soviet statement dated September 1945.' She was about to close the file when the final paragraph caught her eye. Her hand froze on the mouse. 'No trace of the bodies of Hitler or Eva Braun has been discovered,' she read out loud.
'What were they playing at?'
'I see it,' the Brigadier breathed. They both read in silence: It is established that Hitler, by means of false testimony, sought to hide his traces. Irrefutable proof exists that a small airplane left the Tiergarten at dawn on 30th April 1945 flying towards Hamburg. Three men and a woman are know to have been on board. It has also been established that a large submarine left Hamburg before the arrival of the British forces. Persons unknown were aboard the submarine, among them a woman.
At the bottom was another handwritten annotation. The text was jagged and clipped by the scanning process and Claire struggled to read it. 'Hopkins says Stalin told him one of the men was Bormann.' She looked at the Brigadier. 'I wonder who Hopkins was.'
'I know who Bormann was,' he replied tightly. He was still leaning over her, and he drummed his fingers on the top of the desk for several moments. "Turn that thing off for a minute,' he said. 'I think we need to find some coffee.
