exposed unnecessarily, don't you?'

'And if you contract the infection?'

The Doctor ignored the question. 'Once I'm inside, I'm

going to seal the doors. No one tries to get inside this

dome until I say so, is that understood?'

Hassan flashed his perfectly white teeth. 'Absolutely.'

The Doctor turned and patted the waiting service robot

on the arm. 'Come on, Twelve. In we go.'

The doors hissed open, and the two of them vanished

inside. Hassan watched them go with grim satisfaction,

then marched across to the Land Rover and snatched up

the radio from the dashboard.

'Get me every man we have. I want both SnowGlobes

sealed. No one in or out until I say so.'

From inside the dome, the Doctor watched Hassan,

already guessing that the security captain had never

intended to simply sit back and wait for him to find out

what was going on. He was in a race against time now –

he had to make contact with the creatures before the

authorities could take control.

He listened carefully for any of the telltale hunting

noises of the creatures. Satisfied that they were on their

own, he looked up at the robot looming over him.

'How are you with locks, Twelve?'

'+OPERATING PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE

FOR ALL MECHANISMS IN THE DOME.+'

'Good, 'cos there's a terrible draft in here. Be a good lad

and close that airlock door, would you?'

The robot clunked its way over to where the snow was

still streaming in across the floor.

The Doctor turned to the main entrance, flicking the

switches on his sonic screwdriver and running the electric

blue tip of the little device along the rim of the door.

Metal blurred and flowed like molten toffee. Outside, the

security men, alerted by the glare of the light, pointed and

jabbered angrily, pulling uselessly at the now-sealed

mechanism and shouting for Captain Hassan.

Satisfied, the Doctor nodded. He needed time, and

military 'specialists' clumping around after him would just

complicate matters. They wouldn't get the doors open now

without blowing them off, and he doubted that even

Hassan would be that reckless. Not until he knew what he

was up against at any rate.

The Doctor pulled a length of string from his pocket,

tied it around the screwdriver and slipped it around his

neck. He pressed a stud, and the tip of the sonic device

glowed with soft, blue light. Thanks to Roberts' work in

isolating the frequencies of the creatures' echo-location, he

now had a way of cancelling them out. To the creatures,

he was effectively invisible.

He turned to see how his new mechanical companion

was doing at the airlock. The big robot was hunched over

the control panels, metal hands moving with surprising

sensitivity over the controls. The Doctor smiled. The robot

was like a huge mechanical child. He would have to help

Roberts rebuild its memory before he left.

A sharp clicking noise from inside the SnowGlobe

wiped the smile from his face. The robot looked up from

its work, its face unable to express emotion but its posture,

its entire mechanical body language, gave the impression

that it was frightened by the sound. The Doctor launched

himself at the doors. Twelve swung its head towards him.

'Don't just stand there, you great metal lummox!' the

Doctor bellowed. 'Get those doors closed!'

The clicking got louder. Through the doorway, the

Doctor could see dark shapes hurtling towards the airlock

door.
