Chapter Ten

I Spy

‘Um, hello? Excuse me?’

Sam kept herself between Orin and the guard at the INC gate. The blocking was crucial in this scene – she had to make plenty of eye contact, talk fast and engagingly, occupy as much of the guard’s attention as she could.

She’d even shifted her hiking pack to just the right angle to keep Orin behind it. As long as she was upstaging Orin, their audience of one wouldn’t be able to get a good look at what he was doing.

‘This is a secure area, ma’am,’ said the twenty something guard. He’d been working on site for about four days at most, judging by the lobster pink sunburn which had almost faded back to a less painful shade. No one got burnt like that twice out here.

‘Oh, yeah, yeah, I know, we just need some directions. Could you help us for a moment?’

He smiled. ‘All right, ma’am, what can I do for you?’ Good, so the idiot routine was working. Keep meeting his eyes, keep his interest.

‘Yeah, we’re looking for a couple of our friends who we’re supposed to be going camping with. They said they’d meet us at Eurogen Village and that it was around here. You know where that is?’

‘Uh, sorry, ma’am, never heard of it,’ said the guard. She couldn’t help but feel her smile turning into a smirk. It had been about a year since the last scraps of the village had been carted from this spot, since INC had put up the chain link fence and plopped the guard shack here where the dining hall used to stand.

At least Orin was amused by her style. She saw him give her a look out of the corner of his eye, congratulating her on a point the kid would never realise had been scored. Then Orin turned back to what he was doing.

He’d placed himself perfectly – close enough to them to look like he was part of the conversation, but just enough past the guard to give him an unobstructed view of the inside.

‘Oh, well,’ she said, smiling even more brightly. ‘Suppose we’ll have to keep looking for them. We’ll see you around, all right?’ There, that ought to have given Orin enough time to finish.

They turned and headed away together, and she kept nattering to Orin, just to keep in character until they were out of earshot.‘I knew we should’ve taken that left turn at Albuquerque...’

Again, the blocking was the trick – she took the inside track as they headed off along the outer edge of the chain link fence. That way, she could turn her head so she looked like she was talking to Orin, and that meant that she didn’t have to keep looking at the open wound beyond the fence where the village had been.

And more to the point, if they looked like they were talking, no one would notice that he was looking past her, through the fence – no one would spot the tiny chip camereye peeking out from behind the left lens of his sunglasses.
