Chapter 20

Damien

“Dad, am I going to school today?” Samuel’s voice pulls me from my sleep.

I rub my face into my pillow. A soft honey scent makes me sigh.

I lay my head to the side and see Samuel standing over me. He’s watching me. I jerk in bed. It scares the crap out of me.

“Yeah, bud, just give me a second and I’ll get up and get you breakfast.”

A sudden thought hits me. I frantically look around the bed. Is she hiding out in the bathroom?

I scramble out of bed and usher him out of the room. I rub my hand over my face, move to the kitchen, and see the time.

Double fuck.

Did I sleep in?

I never sleep in. My natural lack of sleep means I haven’t used an alarm clock in over ten years. And yet today, I slept in. I don’t even have time to think about what this means and why this happened. I just know I need to get him to school and my ass into work.

“We don’t have much time, so you need to be fast like Superman today, okay,” I say, trying to get him to move faster without him panicking.

I grab his breakfast in record speed.

“Here’s your cereal. I’m going to have a quick shower and then I’ll get you dressed. Stay here and eat.”

I rush off to see Marigold in the bathroom, but when I walk in, it’s quiet. “Marigold?” I whisper-shout. No answer.

I walk into the closet and it’s dark and empty. There’s no sign of her here.

Did she go home last night?

She left in the dark and drove home. What if something happened to her? I wouldn’t have known.

I walk to my phone that's on charge and swipe it open.

A message sits there.

But when I open it, I sigh. It’s not from her. Mom texts to say she’s still off.

My day is going from bad to worse.

I run a hand through my hair and wander to the bathroom and text her.

Damien: Did you get home safe?
