CHAPTER 20
MILO AND I stayed in the booth.
The waitress was leaning protectively over the old woman. He waved for her. She held up a finger.
He said, âJust like the Feds â we get stuck for the check.â
âHe liked the brisket, but didnât eat much of it,â I said. âMaybe his gutâs full of something else.â
âLike what?â
âFrustration. Heâs been on this for a while â got a bit touchy when I called Burke his project. Sometimes that can lead to tunnel vision. On the other hand, thereâs a lot that seems to match.â
âWhat â âgeometryâ?â
âA killer with a medical background and artistic interests, the combination of âeuthanasiaâ and lust-murder. And he was awfully close when he described the details of Mateâs murder, down to the blitz attack and the cleanup.â
âThat he couldâve gotten from a departmental leak.â
The waitress came over. âItâs been taken care of, sir. The white-haired gentleman.â
âAnd a gentleman he is.â Milo handed her a ten.
âThe tipâs also been taken care of,â she said.
âNow itâs been taken care of twice.â
She beamed. âThanks.â
When she was gone, I said, âSee, you judged him too harshly.â
âForce of habit⦠Okay, so some of my income tax came back to me.⦠Yeah, there are similarities, there often are with psycho killers, right? Limited repertoire: you bludgeon, you shoot, you cut. But itâs far from a perfect match. Starting with the basics: Mateâs not a young girl and he wasnât tied against a tree. Fusco can fudge all he wants, but, PhD or not, in the end it comes down to his feelings. And where does making Burke a suspect lead me? Trying to chase down some phantom the Bureau hasnât been able to snag for three years? Iâve already got prospects close to home.â
His hand grazed the file folder. âIf I donât cooperate eventually, heâll call the brass and Iâll be stuck with task-force bullshit. For the moment, heâs trying cop-to-cop.â
A couple of multiple-pierced kids dressed in black entered the deli and took a booth at the front. Lots of laughter. I heard the word âpastramiâ used as if it was a punch line.
âNitrites for the night crawlers,â Milo muttered. âWanna do me a big favor? One that wonât put you in conflict of interest?â Tapping the file. âGo over this for me. You come up with something juicy, I take it more seriously.⦠Artistic. Burke draws, he doesnât paint. Weâve already got a good idea who did that masterpiece.⦠So, you mind?â
âNot at all.â
âThanks. That frees me up for the fun stuff.â
âWhich is?â
âScrounging through putrid squats in Venice. Copâs day at the beach.â
He hoisted himself out of the booth.
âFeds with PhDs,â he said. âBad guys with MDs. And moi with a lowly masterâs â itâs not pretty, being outclassed.â
