Harris started work as a secretary at McDonald’s more than thirty years ago and was given the opportunity to advance to her current officer level. The corporate commitment to giving back fits perfectly with Harris’ personal values. As she says, “People say you should give until it hurts, but I have learned that if you give a little bit more than that, then it doesn’t hurt at all.” Harris has passed the lasting legacy of this commitment to giving to her son and granddaughter as well.

Harris has received numerous awards and recognition for her contributions to the community, such as McDonald’s Shining Light Award, the Chicago Metropolitan’s YMCA Black & Hispanic Achievers Award, the King Legacy Award from the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, Today’s Expo for Black Women’s Phenomenal Woman award, the Top 10 Diversity Champions in the Country by Working Mother magazine, and the Eagle Award from the International Franchise Association. Harris serves on the DePaul University Board of Directors’ Institute for Business and Professional Ethics Committee, the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, and is the chair of Breast Cancer Network of Strength (formerly known as Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization).

McDonald’s supports a great number of other charities as well, according to Harris. “Our belief in giving back to the communities we serve empowers people to seek out the philanthropic interests that appeal to them as individuals,” she says. The example set by company leaders like Jim Skinner, CEO; Don Thompson, President of McDonald’s USA; and Ralph Alvarez, COO extends throughout the organization right down to the people working in McDonald’s restaurants. “When we see our top management living the vision of giving back in spite of their busy schedules, we are all inspired to do the same in every community around the world,” Harris says.

“McDonald’s believes that one person can make a difference, and I hope I will be remembered for trying to make a difference in the lives of people who needed help. In our jobs and in our communities, we are all in the business of lifting others up.”
