Chapter Eight

She was doing it again, Levi thought glumly. Claire was shutting him out.

He thought that they were finally making progress, and now Claire was giving him the cold shoulder every time they were within a couple feet of each other.

To his overwhelming dismay, this had been going on for a couple of days now, and he was pretty much at his wit’s end as to how to win her back or even how to wear her down so that they were back to where they’d been just a few days ago.

He had thought that whatever set Claire off the other evening would have faded away by now. That they would be back to that cautious two-step they were doing, dancing around the issues and the sensitive feelings that were involved while trying to slowly work their way back to where they’d been before this whole wedding reception/Fourth of July fiasco had ever happened.

But they weren’t. At least, Claire wasn’t.

As for him, he was more than willing to go down on bended knee to ask her forgiveness if that was what it took. He just wanted to get Claire past this hurdle and back on track. Back to being his wife and the mother of his beloved baby girl.

It was hard for him to keep his mind on business when everything inside him felt as if it was in complete turmoil.

But he knew he had to continue this charade he was presently engaged in. If he didn’t—if he allowed the situation to get the better of him and make him fall apart—he’d wind up putting his job in jeopardy, and that was totally unacceptable.

He couldn’t dare risk losing his job. Besides having worked long and hard to get to where he was, working here at the furniture store represented the only source of income that he had. Without any income, he knew he was sure to lose Claire and Bekka.

The thought struck him as being ironic, since it was initially his job—and the long hours that it required him to keep—that had torn his little family apart in the first place.

There were presently several customers in the store, wandering through the various artfully arranged furnishings that he had personally staged and set up. Levi kept his distance from the potential clients, instinctively knowing that there was nothing that drove
