Getting things repaired: back to basics
In addition to wanting to buy new, another reflex of a consumer society is to throw things out rather than get them repaired. Go ahead. Throw it out. It costs less to buy new than to have something old repaired. Really?
It’s true that lots of goods, particularly electronics, are designed not to be repaired, or so that the cost of repair is higher than the value of the thing new, made in China.
Still, some things can be repaired—take bikes, for example. The other day a friend spent $150 to restore his 1990s bike. An equivalent bike would cost $500 plus tax today. As a result, he has a working bike, his needs have been met, and he saved a few hundred dollars.
