That happened a while ago, but as I said, a lot of inherent bias still remains within the system, so I want you to be aware of the playing field and be able to play effectively on it. Let’s talk about your rights as a dad and what you can do to ensure they’re properly granted.
My first piece of advice: don’t accept any of the system’s built-in assumptions. For example, don’t accept that dads should only be allowed “visitation” or “access” while moms are granted the right of primary care, or that the default when a couple splits is that Mom stays in the matrimonial home and Dad gets a new place. This may well be the scenario that makes the most sense in your situation, but it ought not to be assumed. As psychotherapist Kyle Karalash says,
