60.What is a mausoleum?

It’s a stately tomb. The term originates from the tomb of Mausolus, ruler of Caria, in Asia Minor, which was built between 353 and 351 BC, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. The monumental tomb was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Mausoleums today, although often stately and dignified, are usually above-ground buildings that house a body in a casket. Private mausoleums in cemeteries are built specifically for a single family. Alternatively, more than one family can share a mausoleum to reduce costs.

Cremains can also be entombed in a mausoleum crypt, although the cost is higher than in a columbarium.
