Chapter 24

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON:

Melvin stopped a short distance from the side of Vesta’s craft and hovered above the moon’s surface, and he was still impressed by the size. He wondered how he was supposed to contact her and had an idea. “Melvin, try to contact the other ship.” He was surprised when Vesta’s image appeared on Melvin’s holographic screen.

“Hello, Alex. I’m glad you decided to join me.”

David had a sinking feeling in his stomach. “Are you still with us, Melvin?” When he didn’t reply, David glared at Vesta’s image. “What did you do to him?”

“He’s still there, but hidden in the background. We’re in control of your ship.”

Okawna moved to the control panel. “The hell you are.” He tried different combinations on the touch pads, but the ship didn’t move.

Alex crossed his arms and stared at Vesta’s image. “What’s going on?”

“The comet hitting the Earth story was to give us a chance to gather as many of your species as we could in a limited amount of time. The comet is still coming in your direction, but it will miss the Earth by twelve-thousand miles without outside interference.”

Okawna slammed his fist down on the console. “You lying bitch! You’d better run, because if I meet you again, I’ll choke the life out of you!”

“I had to lie to you, Okawna, because in fifteen minutes, your planet will be hit by a blast of an exotic type of radiation. It only affects a certain marker in human genes, causing the immune system to shut down, similar to your AIDs virus. Every human on your world will slowly get sick and die.”

Alex lowered his arms and his hands clasped into fists at his side as he glared at the image. “Damnit, Vesta! Why didn’t you tell us this from the beginning?”

“Your primitive society would have collapsed, and your infrastructure would have been destroyed before we could complete our project. This way, as people slowly get sick, they turn off their appliances, creating less demand for electricity. As more people die, they shut down power plants, public transit, and businesses, leaving the infrastructure in reasonably good shape so the new colony can start over on your planet. Hopefully, they will choose a wiser path for the development of their new society.”

Alex wasn’t sure how to respond as he realized the people in stasis would actually go home. “Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because you and your crew need to decide. I know you’ve suspected me since I first met you, but I have never lied to you, Alex.”

Alex thought about it for a moment. “You know, you’re right, but you left out some very important details.”

“Your people are far enough along the evolutionary path that in a few hundred years, they’ll be able to leave your planet on their own. Believe me when I tell you this was the best and only scenario to save your species.”

“I still don’t understand. What are we supposed to do about it?”

“We all
