THE BOMBING OF NEAK LUONG
On August 6, 1973, American bombers destroyed the town of Neak Luong, north of Angkor Borei on the Mekong, in an attempt to stop the Khmer Rouge advancing on Phnom Penh. The bombing – later portrayed in the iconic 1984 movie, The Killing Fields – killed almost 150 Cambodian civilians. Some commentators argue that the attack on Neak Luong provided a powerful propaganda coup for the Khmer Rouge, ultimately fueling their successful takeover of Cambodia.
