Chapter Seven
“Y
ou’re mortal,” Arcan said the moment he saw Darien. “How is that possible?” “I don’t know. It happened when I went through the portal.”
“Pan made you mortal.”
Darien sighed. “I don’t know. Arcan, Marcel wanted me to ensure that the vampires were still fighting the demons.”
“They are, yes. Who is this?” He looked over at the young man at Darien’s side.
“Pierre,” Darien said.
Arcan nodded. “Any news of Brennus?”
“Not yet,” Darien sighed.
“I will escort you back to the hotel,” Arcan said. “That vampire who led you here will…”
“No,” Pierre said. “We’ll be all right.”
They walked quickly through the night back toward the hotel. Darien was glad for the man at his side.
“You miss him, don’t you?” Pierre asked suddenly.
The sun was coming up. Darien paused in front of the hotel. He swallowed. “I love him more than…I guess I’ve always loved him, even before I knew that I did.”
“I don’t understand,” he laughed.
“My spirit…I have an old soul apparently. It’s a long story. Not a happy one. But now, if I lose him…he’s not always the most sentimental of…” Tears sparked his eyes. “I know he loves me. I don’t want him to be a hero. I want someone else to save the damn world.”
Pierre opened up his arms. Darien went into them, content to have a body to hold onto, a well built male one to boot. Suddenly, he realised he’d held on a little too long. Embarrassed, he moved away.
“If I can be of any comfort to you,” Pierre said, meeting his gaze, “don’t hesitate. Now take me to the witches so I can give them some assistant.”
Darien squeezed his hand and they walked into the hotel.

“I summons you!” Brennus’ voice boomed. Marcel placed his hands over his ears.
The two demons which appeared were hideous, part bull, part snake. Marcel shuddered, cowering naked against the rocks.
“Bring me the soul of the golden one.” Marcel picked up his head as he saw a small, transparent tube suddenly appear. Brennus’ soul?
“It’s mine,” Brennus said, reaching out and picking up the container. “With this soul, I will rule the universe. I will destroy all in my path, claim the portal of Decadence for my own. You have defied me.”
The two demons trembled with fear.
Brennus moved forward. He picked up the first and opened his mouth. A great forked tongue emerged and moved around the head, then sucked it into his jaws. The body of the demon lay headless, withering on the floor. He grabbed the second and repeated the motion.
When he turned to Marcel, Marcel shook his head. “Please,” he pleaded. “Brennus, no.”
Brennus reached out and grabbed Marcel by the testicles. “Don’t worry, traitor. I’m not going to kill you yet. I need you. You are now the official keeper of the vampire’s soul. Stay still. This won’t hurt a bit.”
Marcel’s eyes widened in terror as Brennus reached down and tore into his chest with one hand. He tucked the tube inside Marcel’s chest cavity and then merged the flesh together again, dipping out his rough tongue to seal the wound shut.
