CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
âThank god!â The first Valkyrie said as she hove into the clearing. âI thought we would be in that blasted forest for the rest of our lives.â
We were close enough that I could see her pat down her shoulders, where clearly, sheâd gotten some cobwebs trapped under her armor.
Behind her, the second Valkyrie only laughed. âAmy,â she said.
âIâll never be quite sure how you passed tracking school with that attitude of yours.â
Meanwhile the Valkyrie in the front, who was apparently named Amy was busy spitting out whatever sheâd accidentally eaten back in the forest. âJust because Iâve got good eyes,â she said. âThat doesnât mean I have to like the job. Now come on, itâll be easier to see these bastards prints now that were out in the open.â
She finished spitting and clapped her hands together greedily.
âThe motherâs promising at big reward if we can find them.â
Meanwhile another Valkyrie had entered the clearing behind the first two. âAnd you really think that Lyst is with him?â she said. âI mean itâs almost in possible to comprehend. After all sheâs done for us, why would she would just turn tail and start helping the enemy.â
The second Valkyrie shrugged as a fourth drove into the clearing.
âWhoâs saying with her,â the second Valkyrie said. âMaybe she got cold feet when The Mother started putting undue requirements on them? Lord, the number of men Iâve killed in her service!â The
second Valkyrie made a soft, tutting noise in her throat. âItâs enough to make me swoon with joy!â
I felt my stomach turn at her words. I can understand if you are a soldier that killing is a part of the line of duty. But to take joy in it made me feel uneasy.
Beside me I heard the quiet twangs of Miraâs bowstring being pulled taught. I knew she was waiting for the fifth to enter. I put my hand on her arm to steady her.
I didnât want to do anything rash. We needed to save her as much of the advantage as we could. Fortunately, although Valkyriesâ
armor was quite impressive, and although they each had bronze helmets, they had easy targets. The back of their necks was unguarded, and an arrow could sink into the soft flesh with relative ease.
As Mira held her bowstring back the fifth, sixth, and seventh Valkyries tumbled out all in a jumble. Each exclaimed in gratitude at coming into the light.
The seventh actually tripped over her own feet, she was so overjoyed. It was at this point that I released my hand from Miraâs arm and left the temple maiden to her work.
The sixth Valkyrie to exit into the clearing fell with a gurgle out of blood. Then the fifth to enter the clearing smashed forwards as Wellâs massive great arrow punched into the back of her cuirass and skewered her through the middle.
Just as the first through the fourth were starting to turn around, and the seventh was looking about her confused, Mira knocked another arrow took out the fourth.
