Chapter Eighteen
It only took us a few minutes to reach the road again. I burst through the tree line first as I thrust an outstretched branch away with my hand. After Iâd passed under it, I held it up so that Sylvi could pass through behind me.
âThank you, Pryv,â she said with a small blush. âThat was very nice of you.â
I smiled at the beautiful tree, and then let the branch fall back into place. The wolf was heavy on my back, but I was more than happy to make the road again. Knowing that the wolfâs weight would be the worst part of the journey made me relieved.
I could carry a wolf. But navigating this strange, magical forest? That was something I had no idea about.
âDonât worry about it, Sylvi,â I said. âIâm just happy we found the road again.â
I stepped out eagerly onto the cobblestones and was happy to feel their rigidity beneath my feet. The moss which sprang up between the cobbles felt more safe to me than anything else had, not counting my recent activities with Sylvi. I turned to the right, and made to start back to the inn.
But I paused when I realized that Sylvi wasnât following me. I turned around to see what had happened to her, feeling the heavy wolf sway on my back. To my surprise, I saw her standing back near the edge of the woods. She was frowning and staring at the ground as though something there made her incredibly sad. At once I felt like it was my duty to make her happy again.
So I trudged back towards her. At about fifteen feet away, I opened my mouth to ask what was wrong. But before any words escaped my lips, I saw immediately what had disturbed her. Her former root lay limp in slack and dead looking on the ground. It wove a sorry looking way through the trees and back into the forest.
âIs it strange to have it dead like that?â I asked her.
She nodded once and wipe something away from her eye as though she were about to cry. Then she turned back to me and smiled. âIâm sorry, Pryv,â she said. âItâs just⦠well, when youâre someone like me, then youâve spent your whole life, trying to escape this sense of crushing responsibility. Itâs still Strange to have finally beaten it.â She folded her hands in front of herself and grinned as she looked at my crotch. âI donât mean to say that your root is any less impressive.â She giggled. âItâs just⦠Well, I donât know maybe itâs a womanly thing. It doesnât make much sense to me.â
I nodded and walked towards her. As I approached, I spread my arms wide and wrapped them around her slender body. Her skin thrilled at my touch and she responded by spreading her arms and wrapping them all the way around me as well. Her hands tussled my hair, and I knew that she was happy despite losing her root.
