Chapter 25
On the other side of the curtain Graham smiled. He knew Joe could talk on the subject of football long enough for him to speak to Kyoul.
He glanced around and then crept closer to the bed.
Kyoul lay on his back. His eyes were open and he was staring at the ceiling. There was a drip with a plastic tube connected to his arm. His pyjama top was open, showing his bandaged chest. Suddenly, sensing that he was not alone, he turned his head and his gaze met Grahamâs. There was a look of terror on his face.
âDonât panic.â Graham held up his hand. âItâs only me. Remember? I called the ambulance for you on Friday night.â
Kyoul fixed an expressionless gaze on Grahamâs face.
âIn the street. Reglan Street,â Graham said. âI was the one who helped you.â
Recognition and relief flooded Kyoulâs features. âDid you find Leanneâs house? Did you speak to her?â he asked at once.
Graham nodded. âShe knows what happened and where you are.â
Kyoul lifted his head weakly.
Graham went closer. Leanne had asked him to find out how Kyoul was. He tried to think of some questions suitable for a sick person. âHowâs it going?â he whispered. âFood OK? Hospital grubâs usually bogging.â
âIt is food,â Kyoul said in a low voice. âAnd this hospital saved my life. When I left my village there were few medical services. You donât realize it, but here in the West you have so much.â
âI guess we have,â said Graham.
âYou gave Leanne her phone?â Kyoul asked him.
âYes,â said Graham. âI went to her house yesterday and gave it to her.â
âHer parents? Did they find out about me?â
Graham shook his head. âTheyâd gone out for the day.â
Kyoul waited a moment before saying, âAnd she gave you the money?â
âYes,â said Graham.
âThank you,â said Kyoul. âI thought you might not do it, even for the money.â He looked at Graham more intently. âSo why have you come here, to the hospital?â
âLeanne asked me to give you a message. Sheâs worried you might tell them something and then youâll get deported. She says youâve to hang on, say nothing, and sheâll find a way to help you.â
âAnd you agreed to do this for her? For us?â said Kyoul. There was a note of caution in his voice. âIt must have been difficult for you to find me in the hospital. How did you do it? And why?â
âSomeoneâs helping me,â said Graham. âSomeone we can trust,â he added quickly as he saw Kyoulâs look of alarm. âI came because Leanne was so worried about you. And â and she didnât have enough money on her yesterday, so she said sheâd give me the rest when I saw her after Iâd spoken to you again.â
âAh yes.â Kyoul leaned back on the bed. âMoney.â Against the pillow his face was grey, the stubble of his beard a black smudge. âAlways, it comes down to money.â
âNo,â said Graham. His face went red. âIt wasnât only that. Leanne was really upset, thatâs the reason I came, and .
